Problem Deleting Folders and Files
« on: January 02, 2017, 03:05:58 AM »
Hi,

New here... Can someone please help with a problem I'm having deleting folders and files.

I incorrectly uploaded Wordpress via ftp to the public_ftp folder. I have since installed WP correctly and want to remove the duplicate files from public_ftp. However despite highlighting the folders, selecting delete and even changing the permissions, these folders and files remain. When I select Delete the folders do go but reappear when I refresh the public_ftp folder.

Thank you for your help.

What permissions did the files and folders upload with, and what did you change them to? Can you confirm that your changes to permissions "took", or were the changes ignored? I'm wondering if for some reason you are not listed as the owner of the uploaded material, and therefore cannot change permissions or delete it. If necessary, you can list all this information by running the ls -la Unix command against the ftp directory, such as with SSH or a one-time cron job.

If you are listed as the owner, and folders are 755 and files 644 permissions, you should be able to delete everything. If you are not the owner, you'll have to open a support ticket to have support either change the ownership to you, or do the deletions for you.

Hi MrPhil, thanks for your reply. The folders have 755 permissions and files are 644, any changes are ignored. I don't know how to run the commands or jobs that you suggest, I think the best thing is to open a support ticket and get them deleted that way.

I suspect that you are not the owner of these files (and/or you are still trying to use an FTP client to change permissions). I've seen such odd behavior with public_ftp. If you can't get the cPanel (or LPCP) File Manager to show you the owner of the files, you could create a "cron job" in cPanel (if you don't have SSH command-line access). Select to run "every minute", make sure it has your email address, and enter the command line ls -la /home/<YOUR ACCOUNT>/public_ftp/ and submit it. After 61 seconds or more (give it time to run on the server's clock -- no harm done if it runs a second time), delete the cron job. Within a few minutes, you should see an email show up. If it shows that someone other than <YOUR ACCOUNT> owns the contents of public_ftp, you'll have to have support change the ownership to you (or just delete the files for you).
