I recently had to restore my live site database in cPanel backup after a site hack (first time it has happened and hopefully the last). I used a recent backup to do the restoration. The restoration worked fine. However, the next time I went to cPanel backup, there was a new database listed. It has the same name as my live site database but with the following added to the file name: "backup20100627". Looking at it in PhpMyAdmin there appear to be no tables.

1. Why has this database appeared and what is its purpose?
2. Can it be safely deleted?

The first time you tried restoring your database, did it appear to "go wrong" or otherwise not work? If so, you may have accidentally created a new database rather than restoring to an existing one. If this new one has no tables, go ahead and use the cPanel or phpMyAdmin function to delete it. Double check your existing database to make sure you actually did manage to restore it. By the way, it's unusual for a hack to modify the database, but not unknown. Usually it's just PHP files that get modified.
