Hi,

I was half-way through ordering a new domain name and website with LP and when I ran across the new $2.00 / month for cPanel or $0.00 for the new LPCP (which I have no experience with).  That prompted a Google search and I found this helpful page:
* - edited for advertising other hosts

Now, I have no experience with cPanel 3.0 and have no specific requirements in mind, but if I am being asked to pay extra for cPanel (which I am favorable towards) instead of a new special interface with limitations, I would expect that I would be provided with late version of cPanel, namely 3.0.

So I'm wondering why Lunar Pages doesn't buck up and keep their cPanel updated?  I would have paid the extra $2.00 / month if I knew cPanel was getting updated.

Also please understand, that every time I log into my LP cPanel (2.5) it is a tedious process that involves logging into my main LP account (via www.lplogin.com) and then I must click the Launch cPanel button and get a new popup window on top of my first one.  It's just messy.  So as long as I'm shopping, I am willing to try other hosts.

You can also do www.yourdomain.com:2082

and on some servers, www.yourdomain.com/cpanel

Now this is a very good question. I'd also pay 2$ a month for an updated cPanel, but for a 2.5 ... never.

Ah, yes…  the direct URL to cPanel works for me, as well as the /cpanel shortcut.

I'd love to hear from a Lunar Pages rep on the "paying $2.00 / month for an outdated cPanel" issue.

Regards,

I would assume that LP's long term plan is to get everybody off of cPanel and drop it, both due to cost and to its recent versions' incompatibility with local changes on the servers. I hope that by the time they come to my server, LPCP is out of beta test. From the complaints I've heard about it, it sounds very incomplete and escaped too early (is still a work in progress). How hard can it be to (at a minimum) duplicate the features and capabilities of cPanel (and hopefully improve upon them)? Sometimes it sounds like the LPCP developers are working in vacuo, without even a description of cPanel features! They shouldn't see the code, but at least should know what features are needed! At a minimum, all but the most obscure cPanel features should have been in the first release, but it sounds like they weren't. (N.B.: I have no direct experience with LPCP myself, and only see all the complaints on this forum.)

As far as I understand (I just lowly tech, not an admin) , the cpanel X3 theme presents some issues when used on the type of servers that Lunarpages uses, and the Admin team has chosen to currently not allow this as it may present security and stability concerns.

The LPCP control panel, while currently missing some of the features of Cpanel, is having extra features added to it all the time, for example * - removed by Mitch says there's no file manager, however there most definitely is at this time.

The use of LPCP, also allows our admin team to create/add new features that are not available in cpanel.

One area that this has helped is with our China based users who have been blocked due to "The Great Firewall of China" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship_in_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China), where the government of China is actually blocking users in China from being able to access websites.

On cpanel, if someone who was blocked got a Dedicated IP address, their site may be viewable by users, however usually email would not be able to function.

In most cases, we would also have to move these users to other servers so that they can have full functionality, however due to the way that the Chinese government blocks the sites (whole servers rather then just domain name) this could potentially result in a large number of servers ending up blocked, which would affect anyone who has viewers/users who are based in China or other countries that go through China systems.

With these cases, now that we can move them to LPCP, with the dedicated IP they can have users able to see their site, and since on LPCP there is a dedicated email server with another/separate IP address, they can now also receive email from users who are in China.

Another benefit of LPCP over Cpanel, is if there is a Cpanel exploit released, generally the Admin team must wait on the creators of Cpanel to provide an update to Cpanel to block against it.  This can take time, however with LPCP our admin teams can generally get fixes out quicker then we are able to receive them from Cpanel.

Also, since a large number of people around the world use cpanel / have access to cpanel code, this means that its easier for others to create/find exploits in Cpanel.  As LPCP is built "inhouse" , and used only by Lunarpages, the chance of exploits being generated may be significantly lower.

While a large number of hosts still provide cpanel, I have been with many before coming to LP where I host/manage multiple shared (both my own and many of my g/f's clients) and a VPS, many webhosts are now moving to "inhouse" created control panels so that they are not tied to having to rely on the developers of cpanel for features/fixes.

Both Cpanel and LPCP have their benefits and drawbacks, and as I have used both LPCP, Cpanel, and plesk (currenlty only on windows accounts), I have seen some differences in how accounts respond.  In some cases, LPCP responds a little bit faster in some cases then Cpanel.

While LPCP may be in its "Infancy" as a new type of control panel, the potential for LPCP is great, and new features are being added all the time.

I agree with Troy, LPCP is great and is getting better every day.  Unlike cPanel, we can act to involve the Lunarpages customers and clients in the feature building process, to make sure that Lunarpages is delivering to you the best control panel they can to fit your needs.  You can see, just about, every LPCP feature covered here on the web hosting wiki:

LPCP Guides and Tutorials

Not to say there is anything wrong with cPanel, as it is a great control panel too.  That is the reason why we are still giving you the option to select cPanel if needed - offering you more choice and value in how your hosting account is setup.   Thumbs Up

Thanks for the answers, guys.  Candid responses like these are what instill faith in a company.  I'd recommend setting up a wiki entry (or some other info page) talking about why you are not updating to cPanel X3 and linking to it directly on your order page (the one where you choose between LPCP for $0.00 / month and cPanel for $2.00 / month).

However, I do object to having to pay for an outdated cPanel version, even if you are not upgrading for good reason.

I gotta run for now, but again, thanks for the answers.

Actually, all versions of Lunarpages cPanel are up to date with the latest/most stable version.  What you are objecting to is the theme version, which is a totally different beast all together.  Thumbs Up
