Is there any way to sort or otherwise group the options in cPanel? Every time I see it, I have to read the text of each icon to find what I want. Things have moved a couple of times, which makes it worse.

You can change to a different Cpanel theme. Monsoon would show it in menu fashion which I prefer. See http://cpanel.themes.cpanel.net/monsoon.jpg I like bluelagoon ( http://cpanel.themes.cpanel.net/bluelagoon.jpg  ) best but it is no longer supported by the makers of Cpanel and not available on all servers. Just email support@lunarpages.com and ask for the change. Include your domain name or username please.
