OK, this is shallow, but... I set up the protected directory and it works fine.
Is there a way to change the password/username graphic? It is pretty unattractive.
Can I make one in say, coffecup password wizard and somehow incorpoate that as my graphic?
If so, how would I do that?

I don't believe you'll be able to do it with cPanel's password protect, but you could code(or download) a user system, which would allow for you to customize it fully.

Are you asking about a password-protected directory, and the ugly pop-up that asks for ID and password? I believe that pop-up is handled by the visitor's browser, not the server. So, AFAIK, there is no way to set up your own pop-up and have it appear for all visitors (on different browsers). Some browsers might permit customization of the pop-up, but that would apply only to that copy on one machine.

As Matthew Alan suggested, you could replace the password-protected directory with an application's request for login (ID and password). The appearance would be controlled by you, and could be integrated into your application (rather than a pop-up). Your application would need a database to store the ID and password, and carry around a "session" to stay signed-in from page to page. It's not trivial, but there are many places you could grab the code from.

Thanks. I realize now it is in the browser.  Have a nice weekend.
