I only now found out that it's Community Week at Macromedia; wherein there will be ongoing seminars (aka webinars) all week. To see the schedule:

http://www.macromedia.com/community/community_week_2004/schedule/

These are all free, one hour long webinars on various topics like: RoboHelp, CSS, Contribute, DW MX, and ColdFusion.

Here's the general Community link:
http://www.macromedia.com/community/
Here, you'll find links to the blogs of the employees of Macromedia.

Hope this helps somebody humble enough to check it out. Wink

Please, call me Pixellator! Mr. Green
I think I'll go to the World Users Conference tonight and check out up-n-coming Macromedia/Dreamweaver news. I'll post again tomorrow to summarize.

Do they have a World Macromedia Conference anywhere near Naboo?  Wink

Last night I went to the World Wide Users Group meeting, which, even on the Macromedia Users Group web sites, was shrouded in mystery. Now I know why. Macromedia didn't want everyone to know that they weren't supplying free STUFF like they usually do. Crying or Very sad  It was an attempt to communicate with the hard core developer users about what they'll release in the coming year.

Here was the opening statement in the Breeze platform, which is like a giant chat room with one presenter giving an audio and slide show presentation to users across the globe:

Macromedia wants to "take our existing assets and leverage them into new communities to create more revenue." That sets the tone for a giant commercial right there.

They talked about Brocade, which will use Flex to make graphs to chart how your business is doing.

They said it takes 12 months for a new flash player to reach market penetration. They'll have a Flash player 7 for the Linux platform. They'll release Central 1.5 (still don't know what it is) and Brady, which is now in Beta testing. It's a visual environment tool for making applications using Flex.

Next year they'll have cold fusion blackstone and updaters of Dreamweaver, Studio, Fireworks, Freehand, Director, Authorware, and Jrun.

I had no clue what ColdFusion and Flex could do, and here is their description: Flex does way more than generating forms like ColdFusion. Think of Flex as the frontend and ColdFusion as the Backend that can generate flash based applications.

So I still have no good idea of what they can do.

But, today I sat in on another Breeze presentation of CSS and Dreamweaver, and that was much more helpful. --for my next post.

Some of the tips-n-tricks I learned while watching the CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) with Dreamweaver presentation:

Why should we be designing in CSS instead of tables?

because CSS is easier for the webmaster to manage. To change the look of all the pages in your site, just change the one external CSS file and the entire site updates on the fly.

Pages render more quickly in browsers. (but remember, if most of your users are STILL using
NS4, don't design in CSS, because it doesn't recognize the css tags.)

Finally, because CSS is section 508 compliant. That means it's accessible. That means that browsers for the visually impared can read a page designed with CSS much more easily than a page designed with tables.[/list:u]

Oh, yeah, and the <font> tag depricated back in 1996 and people still love to use it. Macromedia stressed to us that NO ONE should still be using the <font> tag.

So, just think of the <div> tag as a table cell that doesn't have to be in a table. There's a little icon on the DW menubar called insert div tag. Just click on that, enter some content, and format the CSS. If you want to see the boundaries of your div while designing, use the "design time" feature in the CSS panel's menu.

Use the tag inspector panel> relevant CSS> (choose tag) to align your divs. I heard you can use the 'float' setting and IE will display it just fine. If you want to have a two column layout that centers in your browser, you can first set up your two columns and then use insert div>main>wrap around content>(choose the max width you want and all the other alignment features) It'll be like good ol' nested tables.

That's all for now. I guess I'll start making plans to get rid of the tables in my site.....maybe.

Thanks for asking, 'cause I never would have known if I didn't go looking. The recorded Macrochats are at:
http://www.markme.com/community/archives/005088.cfm
or
http://www.markme.com/community/

sharpandpointless, I even see that they have flash for artists recorded.

One thing I noticed during the Breeze presentation of CSS was that people in the chat area just wouldn't shut up. They chatted about nonsense the entire way through, to the end. There were rude people who complained about the presenter While he was presenting. That'd be like if we were in a classroom and talked through a lecture. I think that once people get a keyboard in front of them, they must think they're invisible and normal rules of conduct don't apply.

Anyway, Macromedia did their community a favor by sponsoring these lectures, and I'm glad to see they are recorded for future reference.

Thank you for the link. Thumbs Up

I noticed that about that CSS lecture, too. Sad It was so annoying and distracting. I made the same observations about them, as you did. Silly, ungrateful people. Rolling Eyes
