Moving IMAP mail accounts to another hosting company.
« on: May 13, 2016, 01:47:52 PM »
I am exploring the possiblity of switching hosting companies so I would like to know how to move all my emails. Is it possible? I don't feel like coipying my emails by POP onto my hard drive because I don't know how to move them online again. And I prefer to have my emails online rather than on my computer.

Hi Mike,

You should be able to do this using the following steps;
  • Create the same email account on your new server that you had on your old server. Make sure you are using the exact same spelling and capitalization for both accounts.
  • Give the new email account the same password that you used on your old server. You can change the password after the migration process is done, if you want.
  • In your local email client, create two new email accounts.
    *- These will both be for the same email address.
    *- They will both use the same password.
    *- They must both be configured to connect using IMAP.
    *- The incoming server (or IMAP server) will need to be different for each account. Its usually best to use the IP address for the new server, and then the IP address for your old server. This will avoid any possible DNS conflicts.
  • With both accounts online, open up the inbox for the account that connects to your old server. Drag and drop messages from this inbox to the inbox on your new server.
That should basically copy everything to the new server but if you have a lot of email it may take some time to 'sync' it all up.
