osCommerce is completely free. While there is a free version of Magento, for larger stores you may need to move to the paid version. Many people rave about Magento being easier to set up and use than osCommerce, but then they report that Magento is much hungrier for server resources than osCommerce (meaning, you have to move to a VPS or even dedicated server much earlier than you would with osCommerce). Read up carefully on user experiences and decide what's important to you.

From my point of view magento is the best for creating the shopping cart. It is multi store capable and the template is very nice for the shopping cart. The code is depending on the latest PHP5 object oriented coding and also provides Zend framework.

Note that the referenced article is almost 2 years old, and contains some very outdated material. osCommerce has since released 2.3.1, which is much updated and improved over 2.2.

OsCommerce is better than magneto. As Oscommerce is free and  the megnato is paid after a certain limit. The other main factor is,  magento slow down your site's loading speed that some times make visitors feel annoying.

osCommerce shopping cart is scalable to suit the wide range of stores - no matter of their size, type or location. The administrative panel has two benefits - security and convenience. Protected by username, back end is user-friendly even if you don’t have special technical knowledge. The high level of shopping cart’s security is guaranteed with SSL encryption. The purchase process is simplified by easy site navigation, secure customer accounts, purchase history and such extras as review and newsletters.
At  another hand- Magento- one of the most popular shopping cart platforms ( maybe not the one of - but the most popular) The users appreciate the ability of the platform to handle multiple sites. Each store can be placed on its unique site and unique domain. The administration doesn’t cause any trouble for a merchant - it is as convenient as operating a single store. The number of products and customers is not limited. Magento is the best solution to manage big quantities of products. Among the useful features are possibility of searching and sorting of product by several criteria, the option of adding products to wish list , downloadable or digital products with samples.  You may also find  the list of features for both platforms at cart2cart website http://www.shopping-cart-migration.com/useful-articles/45-oscommerce/4892-oscommerce-vs-magento-your-choice

osC 2.3.3 is the current release. Make sure that's the version you use. Do NOT try using 3.0x... it is a development experimental version for experts only, and should not be used for production stores. Eventually it will become a usable release, but that's probably several years away.

I don't have much experienced about OSCommerce but Magento is best if you want to use it for E-Commerce Store.

I like magento over the oscommerce. However, it is more "heavily load" due to comprehensive functions and perhaps require you to have better machine spec to run smoothly.
