I have a shared hosting account and using IMAP for email. I was wondering what the advantages of using SSL would be? Any downside?

Thanks...

SSL creates a secure encrypted connection between your email client application and our email server. All of your email messages from your computer to our email server will be encrypted when you read, download, and send email messages.

The advantages of SSL Email are as bellow :

1. It is a cost effective process for the online operations and delivery.
2. It opens global market and attracts new customers from all over the world.
3. You can give different offers and products to your customers through the Internet.
4. It provides 128 bit strong encrypt security of Email.
5. You can get the certificate of SSL with your organization name.

Note that unless LP specifically says that they are encrypting email storage, that emails are stored in plain text. It's only the transfer up and down to the browser that are encrypted with SSL. While this is better than nothing, it still may not meet security requirements under something like HIPAA.

BTW, 128 bits is not considered extremely secure.

I'll try a straightforward answer, what SSL gives you is encryption of the traffic to your site, the username and the password that are swapped  between your browser and your server can not be listed by man in middle attacks. It means that the whole thing is encrypted and only authenticated users can gain access your site.

Also in the case of some ISPs (Rogers and BellSympatico in Canada) you must use SSL to send email through their servers if you are using an email address that is not one of their domains.

IOW if you are hosting your own domain at LP and want to send mail from that domain use SSL to authenticate the domain to your ISP.  This can often overcome problems sending email through your ISP.

They do this to cut down on spammers appropriating their email servers.

Using Instant SSL Certificates to secure your online transactions tells your customers that you take their security seriously. They will visibly see that their online transaction will be secure, confidential and integral and give them the confidence that you have removed the risk associated with trading over the Internet.

What does that have to do with SSL-encrypted email? Securing online transactions (particularly when credit card numbers or other sensitive data is involved) has nothing to do with email.
