I need some help to keep my father from pulling out what is left of his hair. Sometimes he receives duplicate copies of e-mails -- at times as many as 10 to 20 copies of the same message. This morning when he opened Outlook it began to download over 500 messages; when I checked his account via webmail I could see that there were actually only 61 messages in his inbox; everything else he was receiving was duplicates, apparently.

When he first set up his account I helped him configure his Outlook settings over the phone. When I verified them today over the phone, it sounded to me like everything was correct, and I double-checked the Lunar Pages knowledge base just to be sure. A while back he played around with IMAP, but he currently is using POP. He has his Outlook configuration set so that new messages are left on the server for 10 days. I have not been able to duplicate the problem from here at work (but I'm not using Outlook, so I'm not able to exactly simulate his conditions).

Based on that information, does anybody have any idea what the problem might be? Does it sound server-side or client-side? What extra information can I provide you with, if any, to help diagnose the problem?

Why is it necessary to leave messages on the server for 10 days?  This is a setting that usually leads to strange results...

If using Outlook (or any client side POP product) it's better to simply delete the messages from the server after successful retrieval.

You should also make sure that there are absolutely no remaining IMAP configuration settings too.  It may even be advisable to have your father delete the account configuration from Outlook and rebuild it from scratch...

Hi Mr. Wilson,

It is also possible this could be due to having a forwarder set up for his account.  If you created an account for him on your domain and have that account set up to forward to another account of his, there will be a copy both on the account you created and forwarded to the other account.  This causes duplicates to occur.  If this is what is happening, please remove the account you created for him off your domain and leave the forwarder.  Any mail sent to the non-existing account will still forward and there will not be an actual account on the server to keep the duplicate message.

I hope this helps.

MP: He leaves the messages on the server so he can access them both at home and at work, if needed. I'm not sure why he opted for 10 days. I have my e-mail client at work leave messages on the server indefinitely, until I am able to pull them off at home. I've never had a problem with it. I like your idea of just scrapping his settings and starting over.

Danielle: I hadn't even thought about a forwarder being the cause of the problem, but I checked and that's not it. Good idea, though.

Mr. Wilson -

Perhaps these MS Knowledgebase articles apply to the situation...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;284404

It's always hard to troubleshoot these types of issues remotely... best of luck!
