Hi,
I have a client who was not able to send email today because apparently they are now required to use the "Outgoing mail server requires authentication" option in Outlook.

Did this setting just pop up over night? Because on Friday they were not having any trouble with their email.

Some people in their office use Office 97 (I know I know) which I believe, doesn't support smtp auth. So is there anything I can do for those people?
Do I need to make them upgrade (physically force them to buy Office 2000?). What else can I do

Is this an intentional move by Lunar Pages, or is it a byproduct of something like upgrading the CPanel, which wreaked havoc on their email last year as well.

I basically need to know what to tell them about why their email worked on Friday, but it's different today.

Where's my buddy Amy Armitage? Help Amy, HELLLLLLP!

Thanks
Pete

this setting has been a requirement of LP since I've been an employee and Although it possibly hadn't been enforced at times, It has always been a requirement since I've been here.

There are many programs that are well worth picking up, which are quite similar to Outlook, the best of which In my own personal opinion being Mozilla Thunderbird 0.5 easy to configure, is very fast, and has most of the functionality of Outlook.  Best of all its absolutely free to use.

http://www.mozilla.org

coincidently, cpanel was upgraded, but I don't believe this to be the overal cause.

If those systems are running, anything prior to windows ME, it would likely be a good time to think about an upgrade on both OS, and Mail programs.

Now, I'm not saying Its a necessity for Lunarpages customers to upgrade their personal systems, by any stretch.  Simply put though, Microsoft no longer provides support, updates, or otherwise for products prior to ME.

Essentially though, a number of factors should be considered.

a. Outdated products, that don't support smtp auth.
b. SMTP auth is a requirement for LP, always has been, and is being enforced.
c.  the cPanel upgrade, though I don't believe had anything to do with it, may have.

Very Happy Hiya Pete,

I'm here.. (always here) Wink

Below is a compiled list of clients and which ones are and are not smtp auth friendly.

Apple Mail part of OS X.1.3 LOGIN, PLAIN
Entourage 9 (MSOffice 2001) LOGIN, PLAIN
Eudora 4.x CRAM-MD5 Not supported
Netscape 3.x                 Not supported
Netscape 4.0x                 LOGIN
Netscape 4.5 - 4.7x         LOGIN, PLAIN
Netscape 6.0.x                 Not Recommended
Netscape 6.2                 LOGIN, PLAIN
Outlook Express 4.x and up         LOGIN
Outlook 97 8 (MSOffice 97) Not supported
Outlook 98 8                 LOGIN, PLAIN
Outlook 2000 9 (MSOffice 2000) PLAIN, Encrypted
Outlook 2002 10 (MSOffice XP) PLAIN, Encrypted

Also.. check with his ISP if they require him to use their outgoing servers..

IE updates have been painful this last week.. they're messing with a lot of functions.  I started using mozilla too this week.  Is wicked.

Pete, if this doesn't work, paste us the exact errors and the server and we can look at reinstalling exim..

Yes I agree. They are in fact updating their hardware (and gawd I hope software too) this year. I just went over there, and several of them are still runnging <shudder> Windows 95 </shudder>

I guess the auth was just not enforced until today. It makes sense that it should be enforced, and I told them the way it is. LOL Not that they had a choice but to listen to me. "you need to upgrade NOW" "I can't believe you're still running win95" "how do you get anything done around here?" Anyway...

So, I authorized them, actually UPGRADED one girl FROM Outlook 97 to Outlook 98 (which they had a copy of, and which did support the auth.) Surprised

But that was weird about all the plus signs/@symbols. I never really understood that whole thing to begin with, but I really don't need to.

Everything's back on track now, and they're not freaking out on me any more Smile

Unlike like last time when I thought they were going to fire me...

Although at this point I kinda wish they just would fire me!, so I wouldn't have to deal with their OOLLLLLLLLD systems any more. Frankensteined computers etc.... (WINDOWS 95?!?!? WHAT THE ----?)

I haven't used Mozilla for anything other than browsing, I'll have to check out Thunderbird. But there's no way I could turn them onto it, they have always used outlook and always will. Travel agents must live in a completely different universe or something.

Windows 95... I kid you not.

Thanks guys for all of your support, both technical and emotional.  Luff Ya

Later! (hopefully much much much later LOL)

Greetings, anyone familiar with the current SMTP situation? I have a custom install of SquirrelMail and for a smtp server I had "mail.MyCustomDomain.com". Today though, I received:

"550 virgo.lunarpages.com (webmail.MyCustomDomain.com) [64.235.234.69] is
currently not permitted to relay through this server."

I then switched my SMTP server to be "localhost" and now it works.
This is by design then?
And this also means that any script that uses "localhost" does not need authentication correct?

Thank you

We ran a fix on Virgo just before actually..  let us know if it fixed the issue?

smtp should be yourdomain.com or mail.yourdomain.com or your ISP..

If you are running it from your server it's ok to use localhost..

Setting the SMTP server to "mail.MyDomain.com" now works again.
Thank you for the response.
