Has anyone had trouble with LP blacklisting email originating from Facebook? (ie: notification emails)

Not using SpamAssasin or filters, so it's not my doing. Everything was working fine for a couple weeks and then we stopped getting email from Facebook. (triple checked the FB account settings, too).

I do have a work ticket in, but don't expect a solution before the weekend. Just curious about if anyone else has had this issue.

Thanks.

I had a similar problem with Facebook mail on the Lotan server, A significant amount of mail was being lost causing FB to advise my email address was invalid. After re validating several times, I switched to an address on the Fyodor server and the problem stopped.

Apparently the Facebook IPs are blacklisted by spamcop. Lunarpages support says they can't do anything about this. I guess I don't understand the spamcop thing; can't LP tell it's spam software to ignore the spamcop block list for those IPs??

Anyway, they say to contact Facebook about it.... um, yeah. Anybody have an email for Facebook tech support?  Roll

Kudos to LP for the wicked fast response. But I don't understand how they have no control or say in how email is being blocked by spamcop.

Self-reply for the archives.

Apparently the first LP tech I talked to either didn't understand or couldn't properly explain the situation. Here it is as from a second tech:

Yes, LP indeed uses spamcop.net info to block bad IPs. However, their position is that if Facebook IPs are being listed in spamcop, then Facebook needs to get them delisted. LP won't tweak (ie: whitelist) IPs on their mail server and risk exposing users to spam IPs, accidentally listed in spamcop or not. I understand this position, but I was under the impression that users were given the freedom to control their own spam filters with the spam assassin control panel. I guess not. It appears all shared email goes through a LP spam filter first (employing spamcop.net block lists).

Currently, I have a "bug" report in at Facebook about this for lack of any other tech support contact at that company. Not holding my breath on getting this fixed. I guess Facebook email and Lunarpages' shared email server should be considered incompatible, if not unreliable, with each other at this point. I would advise anyone relying on Facebook email notifications for Facebook interaction to take notice of this situation. (not placing blame on LP, specifically. I suspect this is likely a common situation with other shared hosting companies as well)

Hi Guys,

I think LP used RBLs (Realtime Blackhole List servers) to help reduce the amount of SPAM and unsolicited bulk email to their customers. One of many well known RBLs servers today are provided by Spamcop, other might be using Spamhaus into their RBL list, or probably CBL ? (there are more than a dozens or more out there)

RBLs are used by many of the world's Internet backbones, large tier-1 providers and ISPs in almost every county, including a number of large U.S. and European government and military networks, and some of the best giant free email providers. Most large RBLs subscribers, universities and corporations (which include major banks, aerospace and electronics) have hourly  RBLs Data Feeds. The combined RBLs user base (mailboxes protected by the RBLs) now exceeds hundreds of Million internet user mailboxes.

Companies marketing anti-spam software and hardware gateways have also incorporated RBLs feed into their products where it helps protect their customers by identifying worldwide spam sources.

If you have determined that your originating IP address (or IP address block) has been listed in any of the RBLs servers, you will need to work with the internet service provider which provided the IP to resolve this matter further. In this case, you might need to let FB knows about this situation. There are many good reasons (or bad) behind an IP (or a block of IP) being blacklisted by RBLs like Spamcop or Spamhaus.

Yes, you can't do much about it since the owner of the blocked IPs are FB, you must let them know about it, or, they have probably already know about it, due to many failures that their servers received lately perhaps?

Some people are seeing a "Please update your email address" message after logging in because their email service provider is most likely treating Facebook emails as spam. To resolve this issue, please contact your email service provider and let them know about your problem receiving emails from Facebook.

So FB says contact ISP...ISP says contact FB.  Nice.
