Hi Folks, I'm looking for a little help because I'm not having any luck. I've done plenty of searching around but haven't been able to find a solution - so, I'd appreciate any suggestions.

The basic problem is that I cannot seem to get my deleted messages in my IMAP accounts purged from the server.

I'm using Windows Live Mail 2011 (desktop) and have about 15 different e-mail accounts that I'm managing. I have them all setup as IMAP.

In WLM I have the following IMAP settings in Options and for each account:

Root Folder Path: INBOX

Options... Advanced... IMAP:
Use the Deleted Items folder for IMAP accounts

Options... Advanced... Maintenance...
Empty messages from the 'Deleted Items' folder on exit
Purge deleted messages when leaving IMAP folders

As I go through reading mail from the accounts I can 'delete' an e-mail and it will go to the Deleted Items folder for that account. However, when I shutdown WLM and then come back - everything is still in Deleted Items.

OK - so I right click on each Deleted Items folder and select "Empty Deleted Items folder" and it asks if I'm sure that I want to "permanently delete the contents" - I say yes... and then the Deleted Items folders APPEAR to be empty...

BUT - when I log in to Webmail, I see that the Deleted Items are in fact still there. Using Round Cube for example I see them showing up as light grey in both the inbox and deleted items for each account.

So - they're staying on the server - and more importantly taking up space.

Any idea what setting I'm missing to get these things to actually get deleted/purged/removed from the server?

Thanks for any help!   Very Happy

UPDATE:

Well, to make things more interesting...

I was playing around with settings and in Options... Advanced... Maintenance... I *UNCHECKED*:
"Empty messages from the 'Deleted Items' folder on exit"

I then sent myself an e-mail, deleted it, and for whatever reason that 'seems' to have somehow purged all of the old deleted mail that I had sitting on the server! GREAT!!

Oh, but now - the test e-mail I just sent, and deleted, AND "empty deleted items folder"'ed did NOT get purged!! LOL

Now that one test, deleted mail is hanging around (checked by logging in to RoundCube) - and I can't seem to get it purged... Seriously - WTH?? lol   Confused

This IMAP is killin me! lol

I'm not 100% sure I know what you're talking about, but let me get this straight, you're using a desktop application of  Windows Live Mail 2011 and IMAP for your email?

I'm curious why you don't just change your MX records to point to the Windows Live Mail webmail service and just use that?  I must be missing something, because I don't understand why anyone would choose a desktop app for email vs webmail.  Or am I not understanding what you're doing?

I recently swtiched my MX records to Windows Live Mail and now use it for my business email system (was using Horde before).  I have about 40 email accounts there and it's all web based email, very nice.
