I'm hosted on Saturn, and I'm having the same problem retrieving my mail as I did one day last week.

Is this being looked into?

It seems like Saturn's problems are not yet over...our site's been up and down all morning..not just the mail. A week and a half of roller coaster rides with this server, lol.

I called support about 2 hours ago and the rep told me that they were re-booting server and would be about 5-10 minutes before coming back up.  Well, I'm still waiting.  Going to call again.

The hard drive replacement over the weekend must not have been the problem...or at least all of the problem.

If I remember correctly, it hasn't been that long since they did that. Didn't they replace one the other night?

Dated 1-31-004 8:12PM

"There will be emergency maintenance today on the Saturn server (midnight PST). We will be replacing a failed harddrive and have to run a media check on the current disks.

The Saturn server might be unavailable for up to one hour."

Well, if they had another one to fail, I guess that can't be helped, but if I remember correctly, there's been a couple replaced as of late, and now a third being replaced. That seems kind of extreem to me.

Even though i absolutly love LP, these problems are the reason i just pruchased back MX from a company and had LP add them to the zone records. I got three additional servers each located very far apart. The company offers this for $10 a year. They seem small but in fact, they mostly provide the services for resellers (they do not resell). What comapny is this? http://www.dnsmadeeasy.com

Hi Justin --

Can you explain more about this MX thang you purchased?

What is it?

How does it work?

Which plan did you choose?

I'm at the URL you provided, but I want your real world POV for hiring them.

Best,

THe way DNS works is you specify an MX zone. The MX zone is the mail server (that is, for incoming mail, not always smtp). You can have many MX entires and the way they work is the lowest number, is the first one a sender's SMTP server tries to send to. If that one is not working or is offline, it tries the entry with the next highest number and so on.

Backup MX queues ther mail and looks for the server main server (or the one tried before if you have multiple backups and more than one is out) to go online then sends it.

DNSmadeeasy.com  gives you 3 more servers to add. To look at an example go to: http://centralops.net/co/EmailDossier.vbs.asp and enter test@winokur.us into the address. Then you can see the MX records for my domain

Oh, you can email or call them. The support tech i talked to knew what he was doing and was very nice. He could explain it better than I. (I actaually spent about 10 minutes chatting becuase he wasn't busy at the moment.)

MX record for my domain looks like
MX records
preference   exchange   IP address (if included)
10   winokur.us   [64.235.234.123]
20   mx1.dnsmadeeasy.com   [205.252.161.3]
30   mx2.dnsmadeeasy.com
40   mx3.dnsmadeeasy.com

Hey Justin --

Interesting!  Do you do have mailboxes set up at DNSMADEEASY in case LP's servers go down?  If you have more than one LP domain do you have to purchase more services from them?  What, exactly, kicks in once your LP mail server goes offline?

You only purchased the Mail MX Backup, right?  Did you buy their SMTP service or their "DNS Made Easy" program as well?  How did you find them and why did you place you faith in that company?

Please speak slowly and use hand puppets!

P.S.  -- I understand the lower the MX number the more priority it is given for processing.  So how do you explain MX entries like these:

10 maila.microsoft.com [131.107.3.124]
10 mailb.microsoft.com [131.107.3.123]
10 mailc.microsoft.com [131.107.3.126]

Why doesn't the mail get confused since they all have a 10 value?  (I put in a friend's MSFT email address in the test URL you gave me and got those entries returned.)

Best,

No. All three of thier servers just save it all and then resend to the LP's one with boxes when it is back up. (they will not resend after 5 days but that would never happen at LP)

I found them when i was looking for a backup MX service becasue i am starting a business with paypal as the payent and i do not want to miss an order. They were one of the adwords ads on google. I wasn't sure if they were a company out of some 16year olds basemnt (they got a kick oyt of my suspicion). I called they told me that it is nearly impossible to browse the web and not use on of thier DNS servers (their main gig). They are the base of many resellers. I also saw that they had 3 servers in at least two contries. Plus, at $10/year, i was willing to risk it.

I actually learned about backup MX when i wanted to start my own mailserver (before i found LP). I needed a backup.

10 mailb.microsoft.com [131.107.3.123]
10 mailc.microsoft.com [131.107.3.126]

Huh?. when i first found that tool, i did some things like AOL and saw similar priorities. I do not know what how that works. Maybe it is some type of load balancing and redundancy setup.

Sorry. I often learn something then when i try to explain it in writing i refrence stuff i know which i haven't told the person learning. Plus i ten to go too far into detail at points and not enough in others. Please feel free to ask me anything (especially about DNS) by this post, the forums, PM, or Justin@Winokur.us

I know the smart@sses here will say i am spamming the thread but...

Wow, that is the longest post i think i have every written  Applause

Oh! I did not get thier SMTP becuase i have Lunar's and my ISP does not block traffic. When i a laptop (17" powerbook, aka Lapzila) i may buy it for the other ports i can send through.

Saturn is still experiencing some issues, the maintenance that was supposed to take place this weekend had to be rescheduled.. maintenance will take place tonight at 11pm PST. It should permanently fix the issue.

I just realized what you meant by thier SMTP service.  If LP's is down, i could use my ISP's and uthenticate with the account they gave me or just wait.

Max, has LP looked into offering backup MX. DNSmadeeasy.com told me they provide services to many webhosts and they have great bulk discounts. Just a thought.
