OK, long story short. My web site was suspended today because some AOL users marked my ‘Happy New Year’ email I sent to them as SPAM. And Lee Coleman explained to me that I need to stop sending these emails, or remove all AOL users.

Now I’m stuck, these people signed up to my forum, agreeing to accept email from me mind you, and now I have to remove all AOL users. Dose anyone know how to remove AOL users without going through each account looking for @aol.com. There is no way I’m going to go through each one. There are almost 800 members.

Has anyone else ever been in this position? Any ideas?

I've got same problem. I do understand your situation

i know this issue is valid also with other hosting providers since the source of all this problem is AOL.

I've removed all AOL accounts,
forbidden in my perl cgi all AOL.COM subscriptions
Informed all aol subscribers of this issue.

Maybe I've lost 10% of my subscribers, but this is all what I can do.

btw.... happy new year

LOL, yeah, what a new year...

How exactly did you forbid AOL.COM users from subscribing? And notify AOL users with out then reporting you as SPAMing them again? I'm scared to even send email now.

OK, I put *@aol.com in my ban control for my forums. And it works. If you try to sign up with an AOL email address it tells you sorry no. Now I just got to get rid of the users allready signed up...

Same issue here - My Christmas card to my mailing list got marked similarly. Just went through the same prob this afternoon.

If you using mailman, just open up the subscriber list and search for aol.com and then check unsub for all of them!

Its almost worth creating apetition to send to AOL requesting they remove the mark as spam option because of user incompetance.  Grr..!!

..Its sad, I even have copies of all subscription records as well. AOL users just can't be bothered to click on the "unsubscribe" link, but rather they just mark it as spam and get the site shutdown instead!

GRRR  Grr..!!

I totally agree. That's the problem I had. It's sad because I don't know what members are marking me as SPAM and who wants to stay. Oh well, I'm not going to email them. I’ll just hope they check in and notice what's going on. I can't afford to have my site down again.

Jwink3101,

I got all the AOL users removed. There are two things you need to do. One is stop AOL users from signing up. And the other is removed those that are in the PHPBB Database.

And this is what the email said: (you might be right, look how much this looks like SPAM)

Subject: Happy New Year

We wish you a prosperous and healthy New Year!

Best Wishes!

I can't agree more. It's sad because I'm sure some of the users want to stay. But I removed everyone. I cannot afford to have my site down again.

To remove AOL users:

First, stop AOL users from joining your forums. Go into your forum control panel => Ban Control  => Ban one or more email addresses =>Put in *@AOL.COM

Second, you need to remove all AOL users now in your forum.
This is not easy to do. But here is what I did. I installed phpMyAdmin (look for it on the web). Once it's installed and configured:

Enter phpMyAdmin

Choose your board database

click on phpbb_users

Click on browse at the top of the page

At this page you will find your users email addresses far out to the right.

You can delete the users from inside phpMyAdmin.

Here is what my email said: (It totally looks like SPAM)

Subject: Happy New Year
