I am able to receive e-mail, but not send. I've tried looking through my cPanel to make sure passwords are correct and no one else has accessed my account. The access logs don't appear to have a year date on them, but it looks like someone may have both posted files on my site and taken them down today. Is it possible someone has changed the password for my default e-mail without changing my password for my cpanel login? I thought they were always the same. If they aren't, how can I check on it and change it if needed?

Update: Upon further checking, it looks like someone tried to access outdated links to files posted to my site a couple of years ago. They're no longer available, so whoever was checking the old links got a file not found error. This is what I saw in the logs and misread. I still find it odd that this happened on the same day I am having trouble sending e-mail. Ideas?

Crying or Very sad Blech! I've been trying to figure out what's going on by reading this Thunderbird threads:

http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/password_problem_login_failed

http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/can_not_send_mail_smtp_error

I've tried the suggestions about switching from STARTTLS to SSL/TLS and switching from Port 45 to Port 465. These gave me varying SMTP error messages, but still not making it work. This is my current error message with SSL/TLS and Port 465. I don't want to try no name/password, but I'm beginning to wonder if that's the only way I'll ever send e-mail again!  Confused

Sending of message failed.
The message could not be sent using SMTP server paperspast.com for
an unknown reason. Please verify that your SMTP server settings
are correct and try again, or contact your network administrator.

Same problem here, funny thing is SMTP sending works from my work network, but fails at home, same server name, port and password.

Is there some blocking happening here from the local ISP or from Lunarpages?

What is your ISP, I'm using Verizon DSL..

Might want to have a look at this page:

http://wiki.lunarpages.com/Third_Party_SMTP_Blocking

you can telnet to the port you are trying to send to and see if your ISP is blocking

I figured out how to use Telnet to check whether Qwest was blocking my e-mail, and they are not -- at least noT completely. They do appear to be blocking the port I was using (465 or 45, also 25), but I found one that's not blocked (587). However, when I switch to that in my Thunderbird account settings, it still doesn't work. What gives?

How could I tell if LunarPages was blocking it? Why would they? This is drivin' me freakin' nuts! I'm about ready to drop LunarPages e-mail and just start using Gmail or something!  Grr..!!

I could be wrong about this, but if you telnet to port 587 and see this:

Code:

220-yourserver.lunarpages.com ESMTP Exim 4.34 #1 Fri, 02 Jul 2010 13:20:48 -0700
220-We do not authorize the use of this system to transport unsolicited,
220 and/or bulk e-mail.

It means the problem is not with the ISP.

Lunarpages may be blocking sending from your local IP range, thinking it is spam.

I'm still having the problem at home, but I'm at work right now and I can send email just fine. So something is blocked somewhere between my Verizon ISP and lunarpages SMTP. I've cut a ticket with Lunarpages, but they have not responded yet.  Grr..!!

Turned out to be a problem that was caused by a cpanel upgrade
