For those of you still using LP's Horde, Roundcube, or Squirrelmail, here's a few reasons why you should switch right now to Windows Live Mail or Google Mail for domains.

If you're not familiar with what I mean, it's basically that you can have yourname@yourdomain.com and use either Windows Live Mail or Gmail interface for your email.  So when you check your email, it looks and feels like Windows Live Mail or Gmail but you're using your own personal domain email account.  Pretty cool stuff.

First let me say that I've used Horde webmail for the past 8 years with Lunarpages, I know, Roundcube is a little better, but not much.

So, here are a few reasons why you should switch:

o  No offense, but Horde, Roundcube, Squirrelmail just aren't *that* good, especially Horde.  I mean really, it's 2010.
o  You will now be using an always and automatically updated email system, from the 21st century.  Smile
o  When Lunarpages goes down (not very often, but hey, it does sometimes), you can STILL access your email
o  IF you ever decide to switch from LP to another hosting service, you won't lose any of your email.
o  And better SPAM filtering and other cool options built-in to the webmail system

Again, I've been with LP for 8 years, don't plan on leaving anytime soon, but if I ever do, I'll be set with my email.

So... any reasons NOT to switch to one of these email services I mentioned??

I have been saying that for years, I have yahoo, live and gmail.

Currently I am forwarding my gmail and live to yahoo but I can change that at any point in time if one provider comes out with a better service.

There is no reason to keep running Horde when the web based services are so much more feature capable. I use my own business domains with my Yahoo webmail and it is seamless, If I ever decide to use live mail or another service my clients will never now because my business and personal address always stays the same. All providers now allow you to use yourname@yourdomain.com.

I am in total agreement with you

I didn't realize Yahoo did this too, but I guess I'm not surprised since many others offer it now.

I would have switched to Gmail for domains a long time ago but they charge $50/user/year once you go over just a few email accounts.  I have 40, which is way over their free limit, and so $2,000/year was WAY too expensive for me.

So I recently checked out the Windows Live Mail, and they let you have up to 500 email accounts for free (with ad support but oh well), so I went with them.  And I figure pretty much everything else I use is made by Microsoft, they're stable, so thought it'd be a great choice for business email.

BTW - I love your website, what'd you use to make it?  I've been using Concrete5 and Drupal for the most part for mine.

My website has over 5000 pages and I import all the medical databases (A company does that for me) and the rest I do myself. I do a lot of free hand html.

Here is how you can use any provider for free......

1. Make a master email address you@yourdomainmaster.com in your lunar control panel.

2. Go to your lunar control panel and forward all your email addresses to your master email address.

3. Forward your master email address to your webmail client (yahoo for me) you@yahoo.com. The reason you are using a master domain is so in the future all you ever have to do is re-point the master and all your addresses will follow you.

4. Go to your webmail client (yahoo for me) and select send mail with a different address. Now add any of your email addresses, they will all work because they are forwarded to your master. Once added to your webmail client you can send out with any of the email addresses.

5. Last step...  Forward miscellaneous gmail, hotmail, yahoo, or any other webmail client, email address to your master domain address and they too will follow you.

Have fun having all your email addresses in one place. If you ever use another webmail client just repoint your master domain and they will all follow.

If you switch hosting providers just remake the forwards and re-point the master domain.

Easy as pie and you will never have another email problem again.

Forgot to add....

Why pay for gmail when yahoo and live (hotmail) allow you to do it for free.

Now I understand that google will host your email domain but I don't want that, my forwards work great for me.

The way you describe with forwarding emails wouldn't work for me, I actually have 40 employees with their own email accounts, they aren't all for "me".

And I can't forward anyway, because I change the Lunarpages MX records to point to Windows Live Mail so the mail doesn't even touch the LP servers (besides being passively routed through them).

I also changed the mx records for another business I have.

For this business I forward the email to each employees webmail provider.
4 use hotmail, 3 yahoo, and one google.

Now each employee can use the webmail provider of their choice.

With your way they each would have to use hotmail.

I like forwarding the email to their personal accounts because this assures they answer the emails without having to check a personal and business account. Compliance is better when everything goes to one place.

I prefer to have more control over the business email accounts and have everyone using the same email system, makes support on my end easier and lets us collaborate better with for example the Windows Live Groups and chat.  I could see in some cases where the way you do it makes sense too, but for this business it works for us.

Either way, having your mail OUT of LP Horde, Roundcube, or Squirrelmail is better any way you slice it!
