When I try to retrieve email via Outlook it fails with the following message: "the operation timed out waiting for a response from the receiving (POP) server."

This has been going on for some days - however, Friday pm I did get mail from the past few days.  But since that one success on Friday evening all attempts to get email have failed.

I can go in via cPanel and use web mail to see that email is still there, the account is still there, etc.  My websites are up, etc.  But I just cannot get email.

I am not aware of any change to my system since Friday.

Based on the error message you are receiving, it sounds like your not getting a good connection to the mail server.

This can occur for many different reason, my recommendation would be to contact support at support.lunarpages.com (browser) or support@lunarpages.com (email).

When contacting support, include the url to this post, the affected email address and a temporary password that can be used to access it (can change the pass in cpanel) as well as a traceroute to the server.

Also include what you are using for the SMTP and POP3 server addresses, and what ports you are using.

This original problem had cured itself by the time of the reply.

But, as of a couple of days ago, it has reoccurred.  webmail works.   I haven't changed any settings.  Where is this problem likely occurring?

Based on the error message it sounds like you may be getting a connection issue between your system and the server.

As data must travel between 15-30 (on average) servers (all owned by different companies) before it hits the server your domain is on, if anyone one of these is experiencing an issue, it can prevent you from connecting via outlook (may also affect access to webpages / webmail but not allways).

You will also want to insure that you have the proper ports open on your router if you are on a network.

Run the following command from a cmd prompt, at the time you are unable to connect:

If on pc:
tracert YOURDOMAINNAME.COM

If on mac:
traceroute -I YOURDOMAIN.COM

If you see any lines that say "time out" within the results, this is indicative of a connection issue and you may need to contact your ISP.

If the traceroute shows timeouts in the last 4 hops (usually) then you would want to contact LP support at support@lunarpages.com or support.lunarpages.com

I get I get delays of 20-40ms on the three links with an ip address of 68.86...  and delays of 50-100ms on each of the 9 links with a 154.54.... ip address  After 21 hops it gets to my web site with a 98ms delay on the last one to the actual site.

Tracert to cnn.com goes through the same first 4 hops, then 7 hops on a 4.79. and 4.68 route with delays of 40-50ms then starts timing out.  I can access cnn.com on the web just fine, if a bit slow.

hmm sounds like its within normal limits, did you do it at the time you couldnt do email?

You may need to contact support so the issue can be investigated in more detail then can be done through the forums.

Probably ISP time out.  Happens once in a while.
