Hi - I'm hoping to get some help on this - I did a search but didn't come across a similar situation.
I have an LP Basic Hosting account - let's say its domain is abc.com
I have a friend that I help w/ her school reunion website - let's call that one xyz.com
She had been hosting xyz.com on a free host which was very limited - so I wanted to move xyz.com over to my account as an add-on domain. Everything seemed straightforward until I realized that she'd been using the freebie host's web based e-mail. She has hundreds of contacts and several folders w/ e-mail stored there.
So - I checked about hosting the web site as my add-on here but keeping her e-mail with them at the freebie (using the
her@xyz.com e-mail still) - they said that was fine and gave me the MX Entry info to use.
I went to NetSol - changed the NS for xyz.com to the LP nameservers.
I went into cpanel, added xyz.com as an add-on domain to my account
Then went into mail... Modify MX Entry... changed the MX Entry for her domain xyz.com to what they gave me - dpmail06.xxxx.com - and all looks good.
BUT - my question is - changing that - changing the MX entry for xyz.com - an add-on domian - should have NO effect on MY abc.com domain - right???
I got a little nervous when I saw the warning on that page: "Warning: Changing your MX to something besides mail.abc.com will prevent us from managing your mail. Your email will no longer be sent to this server." - Even though I was changing HER domain mx record.
As a follow-up - do I also need to change her mx record for the entry that is a subdomain on my domain - i.e. xyz.abc.com - no one will ever use that to mail so i wouldn't think so.
Thanks for any insight!
