Since late 2008, I have been successfully adding member Usernames and Passwords to the Password Protect Directory on our club website:

http://www.indylargescaler.org/

Recently, I logged in and opened cpanel to add a new name and got this message:

Warning:
Due to Frontpage Extensions currently being installed and enabled, password protected directories will not work. If you wish to use this feature instead of Frontpage, please disable the Frontpage extensions.

You can use Frontpage directly to create password protected directories just like you normally can here. Alternatively, you can disable frontpage extensions and still use Frontpage to publish the site design via Webdav or FTP.

As a web site amateur, I have no idea how to proceed.

What has changed?

Why?

Is there a way to go back to the previous method to add a new name?

How do I see the existing list of UN and PW??

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

in your cpanel their will be a frontpage extensions button and you can disable them there, it sounds like something wierd has happenned to enable them in the first place so disabling them would be the best option.

For years I've been using cPanel folder protection on my FrontPage enabled sites and it has worked just fine.

Why is LP now not allowing it?

cPanel folder protection has always worked fine for me with FrontPage.

Since the message mentions WebDav and we don't support that, I would say that message is from the makers of Cpanel which is not us. This has nothing to do with LP allowing it or not but rather compatibility between the 3rd party control panel and Frontpage.

On a linux server this works (but your milage may vary Smile

In cPanel:

* Uninstall the FrontPage extensions
* Password protect the folder
* Reinstall the FrontPage extensions.
