Hi there.
Last night I got some advice about creating an invisible counter, by putting "|sh=f" before the > to close the counter code. I've done that, and tried to publish it, but each time the counter shows, and when I go back to the original FrontPage code, the last quote mark has been changed to "so the code now looks like this:

"|sh=f""

and hence the counter is visible. (And this is of course, after I've "saved" my original changes!)

I know Front Page is quirky with code, I've already had to redo my Entropy Search Query by getting rid of the html code for the < and > symbols (a stupid program that doesn't *recognize* a bit of code when pasted in its html page, but I digress.....)

Is there a way I can bypass this obvious need of Frontpage to add the " code or am I just going to have to resign myself to only using one counter, and having it visible?

Thanks for any advice and help.

Kind Regards.

stopop2,

Do you put the code in code view or in design view?

I put it design view. Otherwise the code would be visible on the homepage... Wink

no, that was a valid question.

I couldn't view the source on the live page from the computer I was using earlier to veirfy that the problme was happening upon publishing, but on this computer (we have three in the house *blush*) the view source from the live page *does* has this "|sh="f"" so somehow in the publishing of it (it's the FrontPage "publish" option to the site), this erroneous quote code is being added.

So the counter is visible.

Thanks for any suggestions.

When I said design view vs code view, I meant the view where you edit things as what-you-see-is-what-you-get, where you don't work directly with the code. I'm sorry, I have to ask because sometimes it's not obvious to some people. Smile

I downloaded your code and was able to edit that line:
Code:
<img src="/cgi-sys/Count.cgi?df=stopop2.dat|display=Counter|ft=1|md=5|frgb=100;139;216|dd=E" "|sh=f">

I uploaded it here:
http://www.tu2.net/test/stopop.htm
The counter no longer shows. You can double-check by looking at the source code. The image showed earlier when I first tested because there was an extra " in front of the f.

TranzNDance....

yes... there *is* an extra quote notation because FrontPage is *putting* it there upon publishing. It's NOT there when I save the code with "|sh=f"> intact, which I have to do to publish it (save it, tat is) - but after I publish the new changes, it's both like that in my home version and on my live site... the code changes. Honest.

FrontPage is ADDING this -- it's not jut making an extraquote into code, ("|sh=f""> ) that's NOT what I have when I save it. I have what I'm supposed to have: ("|sh=f">) and FrontPage is adding code and keeping the CloseQuote that looks like this: "

this ( " ) is coming totally from nowhere Confused

So.... besides killing the gremlins in FrontPage, or in my computer, Grr..!! what other options could I have?

Thanks!

Kill Front Page. Razz

Well, you could try copying everything to something like notepad and save from there. Then use FTP to upload.

Or, see if Front Page has a setting where it isn't allowed to adjust the code. Dreamweaver has that setting.

Weird thing is that I added the Entropy search query with no problem. I wonder why FrontPage would care if I'm editing someone else's code? (just a hypothetical....)

Thanks for your help -- I'll try some things out and see if I can't get it taken care of. Appreciate your time!

In FP 2003 and I think in earlier versions, the way to add HTML without FP touching it is: Insert Web Component/Advanced Controls/HTML. This will allow you to insert your html and FP will leave it just as it is, right or wrong. I used this to insert code for the invisible counter and it works fine.

Dan is correct. What it does is to surrond the code you don't want messed with by the following tags. You can also manually add the tags in code view.

<!--webbot bot="HTMLMarkup" startspan -->
your code here
<!--webbot bot="HTMLMarkup" endspan -->

When pasting code copied from a web page, always paste it into Notepad first then copy it back out. This strips the formatting from the web page and leaves only the code you want.

Thanks everyone. I ended up making it work -- I put it in by hand, and put the code to make it invisible within the same string as the counter, which is currently working. Though I will note in the future using notepad and the "adding code information."

Seems to me that FP discourages the use of independent thought (or other peole's code). Or maybe I'm just being paranoid.... *grin*

Thanks again!

I think it's Microsoft thinking that it knows better than you what you want to do. Wink

FP isn't anywhere as bad as Publisher or Word's "html" converter. Rolling Eyes
