Hi..  I work on my website from two computers.  When I finish making changes from one computer I publish to LP.  If I need to work from the other computer, I publish from LP to the second computer, make my changes, and then publish back to LP.  But then when I try to update the first computer by publishing from LP, FrontPage warns me of conflicts.

Does anyone see a problem with this three way publishing?
Is there a way to see exactly what the conflict is?
Any suggestions of a better way to manage site changes?

Thanks,
Ron

There should not be an issue.  The conflict is likely a warning over the fact the you will be writing over you current web on your computer.  Keep two versions of the web on each computer: A live version (the one you have just downloaded from the website), and an archieve one (the last one you published from your computer to the web).

If you are worried, set up a subweb and do a few practice runs on some pages and files.

If you are using FrontPage 2003 you may benefit from the new Synchronize feature. It keeps the newest files on both computers. The result is similar to your "publish back" routine but possibly a bit easier.

Thanks for the replies.

The warnings I am getting are of two kinds:

1.  Navigation changes, in which case my options are to a) keep local b) keep remote, or c) merge.  I don't know why I get this warning since I did not make any navigation changes, but I have been choosing the option to merge, and so far haven't seen any problems resulting from that.

2.  Local and remote files both have changes and are in conflict.  Again, I don't know how I can be getting this kind of message.  When comparing two sets of files, it seems that only one set can be more up-to-date than the other.   That's why I was wondering if the three way publishing was causing a problem.

At any rate, I am using FrontPage 2003, so I will look into the synchronize feature.  I hadn't tried it because I was concerned that synchronizing to three copies would confuse FrontPage, but maybe it will actually work better.  I'll give it a try.

Thanks again,
Ron

The synchronize function will probably work better.  Regards updating your local copy, its probably better to keep the stuff from the server and over write the stuff on your local computer, but that really means for safety you should run two copies as I mentioned before.

However, indeed if synchronizing sorts out your needs, that will be better still. Nice one Rick for pointing it out.
