Amazon's graphic of "look inside the book" -HOW TO
« on: June 16, 2004, 03:33:53 PM »
Amazon has hidden source code and right click on that "look inside the book" feature.

Anyone know how to reproduce the look in the book feature so that users can see the page of the book, and click the arrow to change pages but they can't save it? I see Amazon uses dynamically generated pages and I don't.

Here's my best attempt:
http://www.rmbarry.com/books/melaleuca_story.html
I've generated several pdf files of select pages from the book and added security features so users can't print or copy and paste. The problem here is that some Mac users can't open pdf within their browsers and they need to download the file. We want it so users can't download the file to their computer and then email it to someone else- we want them to email the link to our site instead. But we also want the search robots to be able to "read" the text in the pdf to increase our visibility for the keyword "Melaleuca" and that's why I saved ten different pdf files instead of merging them into one. Each file may rank differently in diff. search engines for 2 diff keywords.

Any Suggestions?

I don't know if it's because I have Adobe Acrobat, but I am able to save your PDF file :? .

If you can view the file on the web, you can download it.  There is no way to prevent a determined user from doing so.  You might consider adding a "not for redistribution" watermark to your pages, but technology cannot solve your problem.

FYI, Amazon uses .jpg page images, but that defeats your goal of having your pages indexed by search engines.

Yes, currently my pdf file is save-able, just not print-able.
netmasterbill is correct that if I were to save my pages as images, then the search engines would not be able to index them.

Upon further consideration, I realize that all I need is to look up how to disable right click and view source just for the pages that display jpg images, if we decide to use images.

But if we decide to stay with Acrobat, I think I should not change it. Those people on Macs, or whose PC's are not configured to open Adobe Reader from within the browser still need a way to access the file.

This will deter a casual thief, but not a determined thief.  I think your PDF solution is pretty good, given that there is no way to prevent downloading of your pages.

If you enable search engines to index that PDF file, Google could cache the text, which would then be printable. :?

You're ten steps ahead of me, Thu! Thanks for the suggestion, and I'll bring it up to the boss.

I just realized that I think there's a setting where you can tell search engines not to cache your site.

There are lots of ways to steal your content.  Examples: I do a screen capture of Acrobat when viewing your file and print it.  I feed the screen capture bitmap into an OCR program and extract your text.  I run your PDF file through a PDF to HTML converter (I tried it - it works).  You can't prevent it.  You need to decide whether the potential theft of 10 or so pages is offset by the potential for increased sales.  Amazon has decided that it is.

The link appears to be dead already. Has it been moved or is there a new one?
