Unfortunately not, the DVD disk is created using much smaller laser cuts that a CD disk. Therefore CD-ROM drives are unable to recognise this. Also the format allows for two layers within a single disk for which the reading laser must refocus (again something a CD-ROM drive can not do).
The only way you will be able to read DVD disks is to install a DVD-ROM or DVD writable drive to your system.

Could put on on the 'What's the funniest question you've been asked' topic, but you'd be surprised by how many people ask that. Right up there with can XBox play PC games, because it's Microsoft, can I get an emulator for my playstation to play playstation 2 games... The list is endless...

I knew you couldn't put it in the CD-Rom drive, but I have had tons of people telling me about some weird programs that they have heard about that can make it possible to play them. I didn't believe them, and just got a DVD-addon for my PC.

a dvd...addon? Like a dvd drive?
But yes coon, I have heard a lot of software like that back in 2000 and 1999 when all the pop up ads used to be about them. Never really clicked them as i already had a dvd drive..

eh...I seriously doubt that there is or ever was such a "program". I don't think it's possible.

I seen something similar to this a few years back. this piece of software claimed it would let you play DVD movies on standard CD drives. BUT... What the software actually does is rip the DVD to a VCD format (of course you need a DVD / CD-rw to do this) so you can play the VCD on a cd drive. its very misleading. Is this the same thing? possibly? M

It is more than likely that kind of software that was being advertised. As it is physically impossible for a CD-ROM drive to recognise a DVD-ROM disk in any way shape or form. These DVD-VCD ripping software packages cause a lot of confusion, many don't work as people expect them to, and most (in order to remain 100% legal with no questions) will not perform actions on CSS encrypted DVDs (ie. Virtually all DVD-Videos except the one you make yourself from your Camcorder and DVD Writer). All in all these are a non starter anyway, realistically, if you have a DVD to use in order to create the VCD, there wouldn't be a huge point it doing it, when you could watch in on DVD. And if you wanted to create CD versions of your home movies for friends, well you'd just compress the video down and write it onto CD anyway... Complete waste of money.

Unless you're making a HUGE home movie that would require several cds to burn on. And you have an enormous amount of money to spend on a dvd R drive. And you have the patience to wait a week for it to burn the dvd

DVD+R drives over here are getting real affordable now, so not so much of a problem price wise. And burning doesn't take a huge amount of time on them any more. My Philips unit is very fast, will have to fill up a disk and let you know how long it took to write.
