As of right now I only have Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7 but would like photoshop. I was just wondering if all of you paid the $500+ or have bootleg copies in one way or another.

ebay has cheap outdated copies of programs. I've been looking for a new version of some things and have found many there, some un-opened, for fairly cheap. I'm pretty sure they're legal.

PhotoShop is well worth the money. After you pay that initial bit, it's pretty cheap to buy upgrades.

I don't know if anyone has worked on a native Aqua port, but I have used it through X11 in the past.

I used the gimp when I ran linux. I didn't really see anything special about it. I mainly just want photoshop but dont have $500+ to blow on it right now.

$500 was practically the price for my computer! I will look around on ebay and see what they charge

Hmm. GiMP seems to do everything that one might need for photo editing. What did you find was missing? There might be a few "power" features they don't have, but for instance they just added SVG (scalable vector graphics) so they are incorporating Illustrator-like functionality.

With ebay be very careful, unfortunately there are a huge amount of pirate software auctions, and it is very difficult to tell the difference until you receive the product.
PhotoShop is definately worth the money, however, having said that, I often tend to use Paint Shop Pro 7 instead just for quickness. If I have something really complex to use i pull up Photoshop, but because I run PSP on my laptop, I tend to only use Photoshop on occasion now... Sad really, having spent the money.
Don't get bootleg, a lot of work goes into these programs and despite the high cost, it's only fair to get the real thing, and besides the support can prove invaluable.

Amazon.com has some cheap software as well sold by 3rd parties. Some is used but a lot is new, unopened packages. This is especialy true for "older" editions.

Or if you are a student and can prove it (either by a .edu email adress or a regular faxed copy of your statement) you can get discounts (my favorite e commerce for that is www.journeyed.com. Love that store ) The Gimp is a great alternative for cash strapped individuals. I've been trying to convince school districts around where i live to switch to it instead of buying licenses for Photoshop elements ( so far unsuccessful though.)

Actually, you don't just have to be a student to get the highly discounted version. You could also be a faculty or staff (I am a staff) at an educational institution. If you don't fall into one of those categories, find a friend who does and ask them to purchase it for you. Much cheaper than paying full price and much less risky than buying it via ebay. I got the Design Collection for $399 and this included PhotoShop, Illustrator, GoLive, InDesign, and Acrobat. Can't beat that.
