i want to add a full page background image for my full page. my concerns are image size and quality. the image is basically just a pattern, but i don't want to create a small version and tile it for aesthetic purposes. how do people deal with this issue?

I gave up on background images because they're too hard to deal with. What looks good at 800x600 resolution might not look good at a higher resolution, and vice versa. And then there are the issues with getting them to work with different browsers.

The only time I'll use a background image is if it can be tiled without noticeable edges. I mostly just stick to background colours.

I have to agree.  Background images are so 1996.  Heh.

Seriously, though, consider going with just a flat colour or a simple pattern, if you insist on going with an image.  Anything more complicated becomes hard to read and comes off as amateurish.

 LOL I guess that means I was already out of date when I made my first webpage (with a background image) in 1997.

but...if you do want a picture, you can put this is your style sheet:

body {
   background : #000000 url(images/webg.gif) repeat-y fixed;
}

just make sure the image is small so it doesn't take too long to load. if you want to test different resolutions, i have a 'tool' that will add favorites to ie for resizing the browser. its called 'windowresizer' under the 'play' link at my site...

yes, with css the background image is somewhat back. it goes very well in techy designs ( or so i believe )
the only thing that i dont really love is its bothersome for lowband users...
