Since I enabled my hotlink protection my users have reported a recurring problem with viewing my site's images.  Absolutely none of the images hosted on my site show up.  The only image that appeared was the ad there remotely.

In accepted extensions I put in

http://mercury.lunarpages.com/~wasteo2/
http://mercury.lunarpages.com/~wasteo2
http://www.wasteoftechnology.com/
http://www.wasteoftechnology.com
http://wasteoftechnology.com/
http://wasteoftechnology.com

This should cover everything and yet this problem comes and goes.  Obviously this is not convenient for the visitors.  Anyone ever have any problem like this.  I have had problems with exceeding my bandwidth in the past and this hotlink protection should help.  I'd have to have to trade this recurring image problem for the bandwidth problem.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

hi all   Smile
Right I found on your site that the images DONT show up  Embarassed
This is caused on this machine because I am running 'Norton Internet Security'. If I disable 'privacy control' in it .......your images show up. If I re-enable it...... your images dont show up :!:
So I dont know if our more 'technical' lunarpages forum members can explain what it is about your code that puts my 'Norton' into panic mode.. I dont know if its a cookie setting something or just that MAYBE your site visitors have the same software I have on this machine.. and MAYBE we just run with norton set too high  Confused
This is only the second site I have been to, that I get this problem on :!:  :!:  :!:
The other is http://fyxr.com and with his site I cant even see his avatar here on lunarforum  :!:  :!:  Sad
Same with that site. If I disable privacy control in norton internet security I can see all his images ( and his avatar) Smile

That's interesting but the problem only started when I enabled my hotlink protection.  And I encountered it myself once or twice, and have no Norton Internet Security installed.

Are all the links to the images correct? Also, the apache servers are case sensitive so you might want to check that all your filenames have the right case letters.

hi again.
The problem mr T is, that I dont know WHY norton internet security should do that.. of all the sites I goto.. there are only two Ive found that give me that problem..Ive contacted Tim at fyxr.com to let him know..( hi Tim if your there  Smile  )
Had a troll around Nortons site and there IS a reference to 'websites not being available when running internet security'.. might have a fiddle when im back at work to see if that makes any difference.. But I am just intrigued to know WHY its only two sites that have this problem and not all of them  :!:  :!:
Any ideas  Question

Mr B.. Can I suggest you email me during the week. ( When im on the machine that see's this problem.. disable your hotlink protection ( Just while I check your site ) and see if that solves the problem!!!!

Rhys
As you already said.. You CAN see the images.  That shows the links and coding is ok..

I have a friend running Norton Personal Firewall and he has been unable to see images on my site.  I removed the hotlink protection and he could see them again, put it back on and he couldn't see them anymore.  He turned off his Norton Personal Firewall and the images were visible.

This still doesn't explain the random recurring error that I experienced just this morning and then 5 minutes later was not there.  I am running no Norton software whatsoever, nor are a lot of other people with the problem.  Any further input on this?

bartman

look at the aspects at your problem and u'll realise that it wont let users view your images if they have 'Norton' activated and you have the 'Hotlink' on... i had a search around the internet and a friend of mine told me that 'Norton' and your 'Hotlink' have not been coded to work together (or summit)

this cannt be fixed and if people wanna see your images they'll have to disable 'Norton' or you'll have to disable the 'hotlink'

thnx for ya time... and sorry for being the bearer of bad news

Hi there, if that site doesn't work, a definate fix is this:

Add the following to an .htaccess file and place it in Document Root for the account in question.

Code:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://your_domain.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://www.your_domain.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://www.trusted.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteRule .*\.(gif|jpg|mp3|m3u)$ - [F,L]

Of course make sure you replace your_domain with your domain and trusted.com with any trustedsites, you can also add new file extensions to the bottom line.

You will have to remove what control panel added to your htaccess, I suggest backing up your htaccess before doing this however Smile

Hi all!

I have had this same problem but it was not with Norton Firewall.  I'm not sure what the problem is, but some computers I have (two at home) could access my website and all the pictures would show, and some computers (one at home, one at work) would not allow the pictures to show.  Like I said, none are running Norton Firewall.

So, I did some research and found a site that will produce the code needed, but with 4 different configurations.  I have tried all four, and found that #2 works for me and none of the others do.  The other 3 configs either enabled the pics to show up on my site AND can be linked to, or not show up on my site and cannot be linked to.

This link also has a "tester" to test links, which is very helpful.

Anyway, here is the link to the site:

http://www.htmlbasix.com/disablehotlinking.shtml

And config option #2.

Hope this helps someone else out there!

John

NOTE: On the "tester" I have found that if you first test a pic it may show up, but if you hit refresh, it will not show up and will stay that way.
