500 servlet exception and Requested URL not found
« on: April 29, 2012, 01:46:08 PM »
 :help:

I recently signed up with lunar pages and am very new to web development. I have a web app that I developed for a class and I wanted to put in on the internet. So I uploaded the WAR file into the webapps folder. I can successfully get to the starting page (index.jsp). But when I click any of my links problems occur. For example clicking on one link and I get

500 Servlet Exception

Note: sun.tools.javac.Main has been deprecated.
/webapps/CS5244Proj/admin.jsp:23: Class edu.vt.cs5244.BasicAirlineManager
not found in import.
import edu.vt.cs5244.BasicAirlineManager;
       ^
/webapps/CS5244Proj/admin.jsp:24: Class edu.vt.cs5244.PassengerAirlineException
not found in import.
import edu.vt.cs5244.PassengerAirlineException;
       ^
/webapps/CS5244Proj/admin.jsp:106: '(' expected.
        Set<String> listOfFlights = new HashSet<String>();
                                               ^
3 errors, 1 warning

When I try to access my other JSP's and servlets, I get the following error message

Not Found

The requested URL /webapps/CS5244Proj/servlet/edu.vt.cs5244.PRPservlet was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

So I really dont know what to do. I was hoping I could just upload my WAR file to the webapps folder and it would be deployed automatically without having to do anything. I actually did just that on a different site, uploaded the WAR file and, boom, there was my webapp. It is a free web hosting site and the server goes down every 6 hours tho, so I really want to get it to work here.

Can anyone give me some help here??? I would really appreciate it

Hi there, I've only got a moment to briefly look over your message now - I'll be back for a more in depth look a little later on.

The first thing I would say (and I'm not a Java coder, but this part tends to transcend languages), the warning of depreciated code jumped out. That would be the very first thing that I would start with. Find out what part of your code is depreciated and bring it up to the current spec.

I'll take another look later on when I have time to read it all properly.

Ok, thanks for the response. One thing I thought of is that I developed the webapp in java version 6, and I see from the FAQ that lunar servers only support version 4 or 5. Do you think that could be the prioblem? and if so, what is an easy way to transition my web app to an earlier version of java?

Okay, firstly an apology for taking so long to get back here. Been a hectic couple of days.

The depreciated message has apparently (according to the page I've been reading today) been a warning that "the normal javac compiler entry point sun.tools.javac.Main will cease to work sometime soon" since some time in 2001. Not quite sure how long the time scale for "soon" is at Sun, but apparently this message was applicable since JDK 1.4.

Now at this stage I'm flying blind - as I mentioned, Java is not something I currently use. The thread I came across about this part of the issue was at:
http://www.jguru.com/faq/view.jsp?EID=492838

Will probably mean more to you than to me, and I'm not sure what impact that will really have on your project.

Anyhow, for the not found in import errors, I located the following pages that may assist:
http://javaboutique.internet.com/articles/ITJ/qanda/q17.html
http://www.velocityreviews.com/forums/t127139-package-javax-swing-not-found-in-import.html

The final error does seem to suggest that there is a missing ( character.

Thanks for the links. I have talked to a CS professor of mine and they said the error was most likely because I programmed in java 6, and the compiler is expecting java 4. Anyways thanks for the help, I have recently canceled my account with lunar pages and so I do not need any further assistance
