What Do You, The People Who Post Here, Do For A Living.
« on: January 22, 2004, 02:10:36 PM »
i just thought it would be kind of cool to hear what every one does for a living, yeah i know thining about it now it sounds dumb, we are all webmasters! D'OH!  But for me i was a carpenters helper for most of my 20's i couldnt do it any more i just hated the job and didnt want to go to work any more, so i finished school and now i am a temp for a company called www.EmtecInc.com right now i am doing easy stuff configuring new Dell machines, configuring email, bios settings and such. before that over the summer all i did was image Brand new Dell's with Norton Ghost and some times after ghosting i would do some configuring in the bios. the company must keep me around for something because i have seen tons of temps come and go but i am still here. A full time permanent job would be great and i guess it will come in time, but this isnt to bad, so any way what does every one do too bring home the bacon?

07/17/05 Wow, I don't even remember writing that. Emtec-man I don't miss that place.

Half of us, including me, are in school. I don't have any job since I just turned 14 and haven't made money off webdesigning or anything.  :?

I'm an ex IT engineer, then ex IT Systems Admin, then ex IT Security Admin, ex IT Network Admin and ex semi pro web designer.... LOL, now, I'm on the support team at Lunar Pages (following being a customer for a few months - that's how much I love this company   )

I'm also setting up a new business for my fiancee (surprisingly not in IT), and looking to set up a business in web design and go a little bit further than my semi-pro days  :thumb:

Mind you, gonna need to get things together and find a talented web designer or two (don't have time to do much web designing myself - spend all my time at LP  :P )

you have what i need and that is experience, both my brothers are in IT one for AT&T as a UNIX Admin and the other at Bloomberg Int. as a Data Manager, my sister works for AT&T as a Security Manager/ Project Manager and recently got her Master's in computer Science, my father is retired programmer and my other sisters Hubby is programmer as well, it runs deep in this family. i love this work though and figuring stuff out i just wish i had gone to back to school sooner. i just applied for a job as junior Net Admin, keep your fingers crossed.

well right now i should take my Net+ i am ready for it and know i can pass it(i   constantly hit up network admin's with questions, in fact if i know i am going to see a particular admin i ask him questions i know he has answers for. i do this all the time and it helps) but money is tight and if i fail it its just throwing 150 bucks down the drain. i also want to take security+ then A+ even though i have very little interest in it, al ot of people come up to me and say to me, are you a full fledged MCSE? when i say no they are pretty surprised, i need to learn windows 2000 server and 2003 although i would have to do that on my own since the company i am with does let temps play with new 6000 dollars servers, what a bummer. all the tech leads i have worked for love me, because i am hard worker, which is why i am still here,  what bugs me is i have seen at least 4 or 5 people who where just morons land nice and cushy help desk jobs, but i keep plucking away....

EDIT: i know what your thinking by reading this, that i am full of myself, but i not. i know i have a lot to learn but i have learned a lot. Thanks Hush, it will take a long time to get where you are.

I shouldn't say this, cause atm I'm working the support desk at LP, but why o why do you want a helpdesk position?

I will get round to taking my MCSE eventually, I studied for the NT4 one, then got told to wait for the 2000 test (which would be available a month later), but then I didn't have the money... Same thing happend with the 2000 - XP/2002 cross over, now I'm waiting for the server 2003 test and brushing up on that... Not that it does me a great deal of use, as the systems here are Linux - But I like Windows  :D  And it helps on my home network at any rate... and comes in handy when people I know ask questions...

*edit* just saw your edit - not at all - thought you put it all very well...  :thumb:

you know why? because helpdesk is easy. most of the time its stupid stuff you have to fix, with all due respect to everyone i have learned that users can do some pretty dumb things, most of the time they dont even read what the machine is telling them on the monitor and just freak out, i have seen some really strange things that they have done and then they deny any knowledge of doing any thing to the machine to have caused it, its actually pretty funny. i want to do heldesk to get my foot in the door, then maybe move on to a Net Tech, thats the fun stuff. setting routers switches and hubs and networks in general but i am a long way from that considering its takes me time to learn stuff, but once i know it i never forget it. you can include my self in that group, i have done some pretty bone headed things myself, but i try not to repeat them.

I've done some really stupid stuff in the past too  :D   Some I laugh about and think that was a really silly thing to do: See my post on AT case switches  :o  and some things are just really embarrasing.  :(

Support desk is cool, just long to get back into the admin stuff.  Mind you I'm learning from the ground up again, never bothered too much with Unix/Linux.  I should get a small linux network set up in a couple of weeks, that'll make it easier.  That's the thing to do if you can, get some old cheap used computers, and start messing with them  :thumb:

My son will be 21 next month - tell me - I am only 37, so I am hoping to be a grandfather before 40. Believe me - it is nice to have full grown kids and only be 37. We are enjoying life - even more now. :thumb:

Nice Jwink. Very nice (i wish i was doing stuff like that at your age )

Congrats for getting out of there thatguy. It sure sounds you've having more fun with everything nowadays.

Well for me i'm a 3d modeler student in my beautiful california :)

I'm not going to school this semester though because i'm taking a shot at finishing my portfolio and see if i can get a job with it somewhere cool..

I also do some web designs on the side (because surprisingly enough it's one of the most relaxing activities i can find.) I usually do it for free because it's so much fun  :?

Linux is easy Hush ;) . Or sometimes when it wants to play nice with me. Most of the time it makes me    :)
