It's come to the point where i need to start making some money so i can upgrade to a VPS package.  My problem is i host non-profit sites and i would prefer to not put ads on there.

So i'm looking for a way to make some money online.  Perhaps start another website to sell something.  I'm curious how people at LP make money other than ads.

Any thoughts, ideas or random donations are definetly appreciated!  Help

I would say a lot depends on the website itself- one thing that comes to mind is Cafe Press- a non profit website for a "cause" might do well selling things like this.

by "ads" I guess you mean something like Google Adsense? where you dont have much control over the content of the ads?

you could sign up as an affiliate and earn $65 a pop for whenever someone signs up using your link (still technically an "ad" but a tiny banner/button on the bottom of a page is less obtrusive to opening up your site to "who knows what")

It's a bit more work but you could sell adspace "by hand" meaning that a "your-non-profit-friendly" type business buys an ad spot that you have total control over... unless you mean you don't want any ads.

The affiliate idea for like-minded products is a good one, already mentioned above.

For more work you could create content that is available on a subscription basis.

The cafe press is a good idea as well - it's easy to use and you can make a bit of cash if you get enough buyers.  They have expanded their offerings tremendously and you can put your own text/logo/whatever on caps, shirts, mugs, etc.  They handle the shipping and customer service and you get the money.

You also can put a donations link, making it very clear it is for hosting and not the non-profit... or raise your fees if you charge them.

I do several NP's too and it's not easy - you don't want to charge them more because they are doing a good thing and at the same time you may not want to donate that much to the cause to pay for the hosting yourself.

Remember that it is a tax write off if you get them to give you a receipt that you provide hosting valued at $xxx for them as a donation if you don't charge them directly... as a last resort.  Smile

I agree with the cafe press merchandise suggestion. Mugs and t-shirts will work well. Another good one for T-Shirts is spreashirt.

A Paypal donate button may also work well depending on the site you have. If they do donate you may want to offer something in return. Like a card specifing the importance of the donation. "you provided clean drinking water for a child in Africa etc. etc."

If you are serious, please visit: http://www.China-Wholesale-Center.com

We are a serious wholesale company. Many of our customers buy over $10,000 from us monthly and then sell to their customers. Many of them are ebay sellers and some of them sell at local or have their own online store.

Also you can try our drop shipping service. Then you can be a wholesaler soon.

You got some good prices there. I wish the selection was a bit better. Oh well...

Anyone know about the legal aspects on this? If I live in the US and I want to sell the above users goods, do I have to pay tax if I sell it through eBay? I'm never sure what I have to do. Can I just sell it on eBay and report it as personal income when I do my taxes?

Yes, Adi, Sales tax is paid on merchandise sold online to people in your own state. If they are from elsewhere, they may owe sales tax but you don't collect it. If you purchase goods to sell, that is merchandise so you would need to maintain records of inventory and sales.

If you only sell your own used vintage items it is more like liquidating personal assets.

Does that mean I would have to open my own business with a tax license or could I just report these taxes through my personal income somehow?

(3+ years old, but just in case anyone reads it and wonders...)

In order to legally collect sales tax, you need to get the proper certificate from your state. You would remit sales taxes to a certain state sales tax department, not through your income tax. You don't need anything elaborate for a business organization -- you might be able to just file a "d/b/a" form at your county offices. Other business organizations can be used to help shield your home and personal property from any lawsuits, or if multiple persons are involved in ownership, etc.

Is it possible to host non profit site, without ads and generate money? It's impossible. If you still want to make money, you can create another website that runs ads or sells things. Just they way you thought about. I have one non profit website and it's without any ads. The only way I support the hosting of that website is through the money I generate from the other commercial websites I ran. So good luck! Smile

A PayPal donation button may work as well in terms of site you have. If they do grant you may want to offer something in return. As for a map that specifies the importance of donation. "You always drinking water for a child in Africa and so on.
