It should be like this. The cafe press is a good idea as well - it's easy to use and you can make a bit of cash if you get enough buyers. This is really very necessary to do so and it is amazing and outstanding.

I would say a lot depends on the website itself- one thing that comes to mind is Cafe Press- a non profit website for a "cause" might do well selling things like this.

The coffee press is a good idea as well - easy to use and you can make some money if you get enough buyers. It has greatly expanded its offer and you can put your own text / logo / whatever on hats, shirts, mugs, etc. They handle the shipping service and customers and get the money.

My first thing to say would be... In an ideal world i would like to belive that my users would accept, that a marked add that pays for the continuance of their free service, isnt a bad thing. I do however belive much the same as everyone here, i dont like to have ads on my sites... however, they have their place. With that in mind, ive posted below a few tips that may help you create a good compramise.

Tips for anyone considering ads
 - If your going to have an ad, mark it well. Enclose it with a little border and some text saying 'advertisment'.
 - Its upto you to you who you advertise for, try to advertise for relevant companies to your users/website content.
 - Refuse adverts that rely on flash, or any visually imposing ad for that matter.
 - If it can be avoided, avoid ads that rely on external data from untrusted sources. You never know what you could end up representing!

An idea, that may save your user perception.
1. If your a free from profit website with ads, post your advertisment earnings and server expenses publicly.
2. Any profit that you do subsequenctly earn, can be donated to charity.
3. Give your users an online poll to vote for who gets the moolah, and post that data also.

Anyone got a few tips to add to the list, be my guest. Ide like to see an advertising handbook pinned on the LP forum.
