How would you like to use Windows as your main operating system, and then install a Linux operating system (like Ubuntu) so they can be run side by side?  Recently, I've been playing around with installing virtual machines on my own PC, and I thought I would share with you the steps I took to get started.

How to Run Any OS From Within Windows – Part 1

What if you could test practically any operating system from within your current computer setup?  By setting up a virtual machine inside of your current computer, you can do exactly that – and the best tool to use to get this done is Sun VirtualBox.  I am far from being any sort of operating system geek, but even I was able to get Ubuntu up and running from within my Windows Vista machine, so anything really is possible.

How to Run Any OS From Within Windows – Part 2

Yesterday I showed you how to get a virtual machine setup from within your current operating system using Sun VirtualBox.  Now, if you have not skipped ahead of me in the process I am ready to share with you step number two.  Now that our virtual machine is ready, it needs an operating system.  Today, we will go through each step you need to take to get an operating system installed on your new virtual machine setup.

Hope you enjoy, and if you give it a shot - let us know what all you've done here in this thread!  Clapping

I do it the other way around- I use Linux as my main OS, and run WinXP as a VM. With the gift of a pretty nice computer from a friend, my "old main" computer will be Virtual Machines only (running virtual box "headless"), and will probably run 3 different OS's.
I am going to play around with Xen though Smile.

I use my 27" iMac running Parallels to also run Windows 7

It's neat to watch windows crash while the mac is still running, that's happened twice so far.

I can't wait to install Ubuntu as well, so far I have only managed to run it off CD.

Been using Sun VirtualBox awhile now to run Ubuntu on Vista. Very cool. I'm loving it! Both were very easy to install and maintain. I'm getting to play Rise of the Triad again on Ubuntu, woohoo! Still no luck getting it to see my Palm handheld. Had to define some USB devices in VirtualBox to get them seen by Ubuntu. HP printer working great after downloading drivers. External USB HD working great too.
