I thought this might be a fun poll for everybody, what is your favorite web browser to use and why?  Simple, short and to the point.  It seems like these days we have more and more options when it comes to how we browse the Web.  From somebody who remembers the old Netscape vs IE war, I never thought we would be doing it all over again - but this time with 2 or 3 times as much competition.

How about you?  Have you ever thought about switching browsers?  Are you loyal to your browser brand, or would you switch if another one was as good as the one you have now?

Have been playing with Google Chrome which has promise, and the extensibility of Firefox still makes it my #1.

FireFox easily. I liked the old IE 5/6, but never have liked IE 7/8 because it seems too buggy. I know alot of people that use IE, and they always complain about it locking up, crashing, loading slow, etc. I tell them to get FireFox and they almost instantly state it's alot quicker.

I pretty much use Firefox only, but I really have a love/hate relationship with it, though a lot of that is probably due to other issues. My biggest gripe is that on my system it locks up fairly often when using java.
But.... I'm running Debian Lenny 64 bit, and there isn't a Linux 64 bit version, so I compiled it myself.

But.... I do have the only native 64 bit flash player Smile.

I mainly use IE7 on my desk top. I have IE8 on my laptop and it works great! FF is good too, but I prefer IE.

Now that I am figuring out how to use the Develop features of Safari, I'm using FF less and less.

Well, I guess I could share my pick.  I've been a big fan of Firefox for many years now - ever since I started using it as an alternative browser for some of my own professional work, then watched it slowly take over all my day to day browsing.  By far for me it has the best community, best developers and all around I am as big of a fan of the company behind the browser as I am the browser itself.

So with that said, Firefox would be my proverbial rat in the browser war race.

Firefox is my pick because of the addons.  I program web-commerce sites for my day job and would not enjoy living without "Web Developer".  It's invaluable when trying to pick apart why my CSS is acting funny or to make new changes.  I work with older pages that were created by WYSIWYGgers so there are tons of nested tables it helps with.

If not for the addons I'd probably use Safari. IE is not in my toolbox for anything but testing... I just don't like it.

I have at least 5 browsers loaded for testing my site but Firefox is the one I use all the time.

I use Firefox for my day-to-day usage. I still have IE6 simply because I use it to test pages. MS is bugging me to "upgrade" to IE8. I recall hearing that it has IE6 and IE7 emulation modes, so I can test my pages on all of IE6/7/8. I also understand that installing IE8 will wipe out my IE6, so I don't want to burn that bridge if I don't have to. Can anyone tell me if 1) installing IE8 will remove IE6, 2) if IE8's emulation mode for IE6 is really faithful, or just approximate (particularly with regards to CSS and JS), and 3) how painful is it to switch modes? And yes, I realize that fewer and fewer sites support IE6, but there's apparently still a substantial install base out there, particularly at some companies and many libraries. Thanks!

Well yes, I realize that IE (especially IE6) is a miserable piece of shinola, but I can't get rid of it because some Windows functions need it (e.g., upgrades) and I need to test pages on it. There are still a fair number of IE6 browsers out there, so I need to test that my pages at least don't blow up on that browser. I wouldn't dream of tuning my pages for IE6, but at least they shouldn't go down in flames. So currently, I still have IE6. Now, MS is pushing me to upgrade to IE8. If I can do that while either retaining the IE6 installation, or the IE6 emulation is really good in IE8, I'll be willing to do the upgrade. I'm not going to abandon FF3.5, but at least I'll have a wider selection of IE browsers to test on. I just want to be sure that I'll still have an accurate test of how things work on IE6 when I'm all done.

Yeah, I can't wait till the day we can stop testing sites for IE6 - then again, by the time that happens, IE11 will be out, and we'll be complaining about having to keep IE8 around for testing. Wink
