How my affiliate link looks to others.
« on: July 14, 2005, 04:07:17 AM »
Currently, when a user hovers my affiliate link, it shows as
http://www.lunarpages.com/?id=myusername (in the field at the bottom of the page in IE)

Is there any way to hide the "myusername" part?

Thanks!
Rick.

In a word ( ok 3 words but you know what I mean )  I don't think so..

I never think thats important (other than people ask me what mine means.) as its of no benefit to anyone but you

Thanks, Pete.

Am I right to say, then, that if I find a website with a link to Lunarpages on it - and when I hover over the link and see only http://www.lunarpages.com, then that link is not an Affiliate link?

...like the Lunarpages links at the bottom of these pages?:

lol. surprising as it may sound rickJ not everyone is or wants to be an affiliate, they are just happy to say who they are hosted with. ( And aren't we all. I have 2 "LunarPages.com" T-shirts that dont get me any affiliation payments when i wear them )

Check the sourcecode and you will find they are just direct links.

I must admit I'm sure I've seen a link somewhere that didn't seem to be a link to LP but went there anyway.( which I did think was a little like cheating )

I suppose you could create a redirect link page then link to that instead of your affiliation link itself

Or use a tinyUrl instead
( I just used my affiliation  tiny Url and I could naturally see it going to through my affiliation login URL to LP )
Speaking personally I'm glad it shows me where im going as otherwise I could create pishing links that seemed to be going where they dont. !!

So you think, then, that rather than the three examples above being Affiliates who have successfully hidden their username, that they are just not Affiliates?

If so, you're right:  If you're going to refer folks to LP anyway, why not make a buck if they decide to choose LP?

you will probably find many companies that have their own logging methods for link generation
The one you quoted in your last post being one of them.

if you had a logo or something on your page you can convert it to an animated gif or a animated gif and then the link wouldn't show, alternatively as pete said you could have the link going to 'yourdomain.com/lunarpages' then have it redirect to lunarpages.com instantly

Garvey. RickJ's Point is whats seen in the status bar.
My 'blinking'  link here on the forums directs you to www.x-visions.com ( or is it co.uk ( I have both) ) using my animated banner, but you still see where your going to go to in the status bar.

You know, you could take this route:

Code: [Select]

<A HREF="http://www.lunarpages.com/?id=myusername"
onMouseover="window.status='http://www.lunarpages.com/'; return true">This
is your link text, or image, or whatever.</A>

That way, when the user puts his/her mouse over your link, they see just the plain lunarpages.com in the status window.

What I do, for my won tracking purposes, is that, whenever someone clicks on a link it says, You're now Leaving InfoSharkz.com, and below it it says the company name and logo. Then it does a meta redirect.

You know, you could take this route:

(((Code snipped.)))

That way, when the user puts his/her mouse over your link, they see just the plain lunarpages.com in the status window.

You could take it a step further and add "onmouseout="window.status='';" so that when the mouse leaves the link the status returns to blank.
