I did what the instructions said... I copied the code, went to the Control Panel, then to File Manager, then wasn't sure which file I was supposed to paste it into (the one that ends with html, or not?) but I tried a few different things and nothing worked.

Or rather, I did get the code to copy, and if you click it, it takes you to the lunarpages site.  But it's displayed as CODE, not as a cute little icon.  Any suggestions?  I am guessing this is being caused by my using a Mac, but I'm not sure.

It shouldn't be affected which operating system you are using.
Yes, it should be pasted into the .html file, otherwise you most likely wouldn't be able to view it on the page.

What Browser are you using to view it in?
What are you using to edit/upload the file to your domain with?
