Please don't beat me over the head for asking this—I'm admitting right now that this is probably a stupid question, and I apologize in advance—but:

What is the difference between Shockwave and Shockwave Flash (other than that they use different players)?  They are products of the same company, so it's not like they're "competing standards"; there must be some utility to having the two different formats.  But I haven't been able to figure what that utility might be.

Please educate me.  Thank you!

Eliz.

Flash Player is for items that were made using Macromedia Flash and Shockwave Player is used for items that were made in Macromedia Director.  The difference between the two is that Flash is more focused on animation and GUIs and Shockwave is more focused on creating multimedia application/games.  Technically, you can make animations in Shockwave and games in Flash, but if I remember correctly, Shockwave is setup to run more like a software developing application and has a more robust programming language than Flash.

Actually theres really very little difference between shockwave and shockwave flash... the difference really is similar to the deference between an Apple Tree and an Apple.

Shockwave is basically the "mother" technology it supports anything under it while Shockwave flash is specific to the SWF format.

So basically if you want to be able to incorporate 3d, and Lingo, and have Joystick support, and flash support,  that sort of more advanced stuff you can use Director to create stuff in the shockwave format.

If you just want flash support without the other junk then use any program that exports to flash such as Macromedia Flash or Adobe live motion.
