How do I set up custom error pages such as a 404 error page?

A search for this revealed mention of a tutorial on this which ironically produced... a 404 error!

If you have cPanel, it includes a button to create the core of a set of error documents. You still need to wrap some HTML around them to make them fully functional pages. I don't know if LPCP has anything similar. See also http://www.catskilltech.com/freeSW/SMF/faqs/#errorpages . Basically, they are regular HTML pages with some special comments that embed information at the server.

Thank You  MrPhil.  I saw the shtml files and wasn't sure if I could edit them. I see they have server side functionality and can be customized. I also read up on creating simple html error pages and calling them from the .htaccess file. Works just dandy.  Thumbs Up

.htaccess file always works and it has some neat settings which if properly put can give you granular control over what and how you want to mange the site. <spam link removed>

Thanks. I always want to set this up but I'm too afraid to mess up a good working site.
