I use FP2002 also and have never had a problem.
I suspect the problem is that you may be trying to upload to the wrong directory, or have created a directory you don't need.
You do not have to do anything or make any directories to use FP. Just upload it to your domain name -
www.mydomain.com - no directories, no nothing. FP knows what to do with it.

Do NOT use FTP to upload FP2002 files unless you are just doing one or two single pages, and even then I recommend using the single file upload from FP. You can mess up the structure of your site if you try to mix and match.
It is not really a disaster, as you can just reinstall the FP extensions and re-upload the web, but it can be a real hassle.
