Ah so I got all registered and tried to install an XMB forum according to these guidelines - http://www.xmbforum.com/docs/manual

Basically, my domain is tarheart.org, and I wanted the forum to be at http://edition.tarheart.org

So firstly I created a subdomain- edition.tarheart.org
Then I went to FTP accounts and created an account regitstered to the domain: edition.tarheart.org (This was the first FTP account I created).
When I logged in to this FTP I found some files and directories, which I stupidly deleted and continued to follow the forum's instruction guidelines. I presumed that because I was in the edition.tarheart.org login, that everything was transferring to edition.tarheart.org and so I uploaded the needed files.

Then I tried to get on the forum install - visting this link: http://edition.tarheart.org/forum_directory/install/ (If you click it you'll see a pretty much identical page to what i saw)

Thinking this odd, I decided to delete the uploaded files and try again - same result. I then visited the main domain: tarheart.org, to find the exact same page - as compared to the default lunarpages page I'd seen earlier. Even odder. I created a FTP account under the domain tarheart.org, to find the exact same files I thought I'd uploaded to edition.tarheart.org - there.

Now what I think happened is: if you look at the red text above, the files I deleted were actually the default files that should have remained there (in the home directory?). Basically, I thought when I created a FTP account under edition.tarheart.org - I was only getting access to edition.tarheart.org and not the main site but it seems not. I think I was only ever accessing the root site and uploading nothing to the subdomain - which is an annoyance to say the least.

So now I'm in a pickle, and I need help in the following ways:

1. Getting rid of the horrible 404 Not Found pages - if anybody has the default files and directories that come with a new site that'd be great - I think I could install these and restore the site to how it was.

2. Finding a way to make the edition.tarheart.org FTP account, upload to ONLY this sub domain (without access to the main site) - although I will own both my site and the forum, I may chose to allow fellow admins FTP access to the forum and would like it if they could ONLY access the forum files and not my whole entire site.

3. General help with where I've gone wrong, solutions and possibly advice for the future.

I hope this makes sense, I've tried to be coherent as possible however this is relatively complex for me and I probably can't phrase or explain what I mean in completely technical terms. However, I think you'll understand what I mean. I'll be so grateful for any help given, especially during the festive period, it would mean alot.

PS: When I created a database user I enterred tarhe1_alex - however when looking at my stats I'm being shown tarhe1_alex@[a series of numbers] - not sure if it's safe to post these numbers online. Is my username tarhe1_alex or tarhe1_alex@[numbers] ?

- Thanks Smile

Hello,

First of all, you could contact support@lunarpages.com to ask your account be reset to the default. That will recreate your account. This is the easiest way to get everything back to normal. You should remove your subdomain in the meantime and re-create it after the account is re-created.

Next, you can create FTP accounts in cPanel. You could go into that area and create an FTP user that will point to the subdomain directory and use that user (not your main cPanel user) to log into FTP then.

Where you've gone wrong is deleting files and folders when you didn't know what those files and folders did. My advice is to never delete anything unless you positively know what that file or folder does. It does absolutely no harm to keep files and folders on an account, and you can destroy it if you remove vital ones. Rule of thumb, don't delete. It will make your life easier.

Finally for your database user, it is tarhe1_alex if that is the name of the database user. The @series of numbers is likely your IP address or the IP address of the server. If it is your IP address, you can confirm that by going to http://whatismyip.com which will show you what your IP address happens to be.

Thanks.

Hi tarheart,

It appears that you are making progress as I am seeing an up and running XMB forum when I go to http://edition.tarheart.org.   Thumbs Up
