Hello everyone, I'm very new at this computer stuff and am going to need lots of help . I bought my domain name and web hosting at Lunarpages  now just have to figure out how to make everything work. I really donot want to put up a web page but want to put up a forum . If anyone could steer me in the right direction to get started I would thank them greatly. I am sure once I know where to go to do stuff I will be fine but then again I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed

Hi ehpsaws,

Welcome to the Lunarpages family and our forum community Smiling

For a forum, if you are on cPanel or LPCP, you would have the option to install SMF forum (the same type we use here) automatically in either. If you let us know what server you are on or the domain name, we could provide steps on how to install it.

Thanks.

I guess I should tell more , I just bought the domain name and hosting , ehpsaws.com is the domain name , server is kappa.
I know this will sound very stupid to everyone but if anyone can tell me what do I need to do now to get stuff going, I see nothing, I hear nothing and I know nothing , just ask me and I can prove it  Confused

remember take it slow as I know nothing about this stuff or if there is a thread or video that will show me what to do that would also be awesome ,
thanks Ed Heard

You might want to have a look at http://wiki.lunarpages.com/WebApp_Pool_in_LPCP which gives the basics of installing various software on a lpcp server.

Hi ehpsaws,

Yep, it is the first thing you need to do if you want a forum. You should go into the WebApp Pool in LPCP and install SMF, which is a forum.

Thanks.

thanks everyone, just wondering is SMF better than phpbb, I need something that is hard for people to hack into . I was a mod. on another site that ran VBulletin  but was told by the person I bought everything from Lou that Lunarpages does not really like it , just trying to get the best bang for the buck and thanks again  Ed

If you are not certain how to install and are just starting out, SMF is there to auto install and phpBB is not, so right there SMF is easier. Next, SMF has a click one button auto upgrade in the Administration area panel. As far as I know phpBB does not unless they added that option in the past couple of years.

phpBB is exploited more frequently in my experience, and I would not personally ever recommend using it. If you want something that is hard for people to hack, then that wouldn't be phpBB. I don't know about SMF being the least hackable, but any forum other than phpBB would be a better bet in being less likely to be exploited anyway.

If you want to run vBulletin, we cannot assist you in setup for it as it isn't free software but has to be purchased. Given that situation, you would need vBulletin to assist with questions on their product. I have not really seen vB getting hacked very frequently compared to phpBB, so it is more secure than phpBB in that respect. Again, this is from my experience.

This last bit here is my opinion: I think phpBB is a piece of junk. Any other forum on the planet would probably be better than using phpBB and would get less frequently hacked. A circus clown or a performing monkey could easily hack into it. Again, that is just my opinion, so take it for what it is worth.

Wow, Tristan, tell us how you really feel about phpbb Wink

Personally I have never had a problem with phpbb, especially if you keep up with the updates. Phpbb has been around for almost 10 years and has a huge user base. Just my two cents.

If you posted in it and it is displaying in a browser, what else are you needing for it to run specifically? If we have more details on what you are wanting to do with the forum or have work on the forum, we'd have a better idea on what to suggest.

If you want to provide a link to the forum so we can see it live and make suggestions, that might be useful.
