I log onto my home page http://russiannyc.net and instead of my usual page I see this:

How could this have happened and how do I get rid of it, is there a way to find those responsible, and how can I prevent this from happening again? Please help!!!

I edited out that link, because I wasn't sure if the site in question might have anything harmful on it to our fellow users here.  First thing I would suggest is to review your hosting account, pages, files and see if you can spot, change and fix anything that is out of the ordinary.  Next I would suggest you change your passwords, and then I would contact support@lunarpages.com for any other questions.  Sorry to hear this happened to you but hopefully that advice will help you get back on track.

trying to redirect to another subdirectory so that my readers have a site to to go to and I cant. Also, writing to support@lunarpages is like writing letters during the American Revolutionary War Sad

On redirections, you might try the suggestions here:

Well, they are still doing it even after I changed passwords and revamped my index.html page - there they go again, even posting their emails.

As far as support@lunarpages.com - first responce in 8 hours - totally useless "go take a hike" responce - tu sum it up: "change passwords", sort through your files", you're on your own, delete everything and reinstall. Second responce - 4 more hours - sum total of what they said.  "We don't know what to do, we can't do anything, go take a hike and use Raw Access to look for a needle in a haystack"

Question for peers -- Any usefull security advice? How do I protect my files?

P.S.(replies such as "contact support@lunarpages.com need not apply)

Are you using any PHP or MySQL?  Or is it just a static HTML file?  I don't see how anyone could access your site unless you have a script vulnerability or if someone found out your password... which reminds me, did you change all your FTP passwords?  Also make sure there's no new accounts there that don't belong.  Furthermore, check your anonymous FTP access... make sure they didn't change that setting to allow anonymous FTP users to upload files.

As a last resort -- and this might sound crazy -- you might consider contacting them.  Yes, they vandalized your site, but their message says to contact them to fix your security problem.  Maybe they'll tell you what the vulnerability is...?  It's worth a shot... Of course, don't give them any information; just ask them how you can fix your problem. Sometimes hackers do this kind of stuff to point out vulnerabilities... it's not guaranteed, though.
