I'm slowly developing a sense of putting together an E-Learning venture for myself...

I tried yesterday to upload a power point...deleted it several times as well when I couldn't figure how to make use of it.  I'm trying to learn what I can about Moodle, perhaps setting up a podcast to accommodate my power point...

First efforts, I just loaded up the saved file from my system...a normal saved power point file.  The public html upload said it uploaded, but couldn't find it.  I figured maybe because I had space between each word of the file title, so I put "_" between each word, but in uploading that didn't do much.

I figured, perhaps it needs to be uploaded similar to webpages as ".htm" files...so, next...I saved the Power Point as "for the web" on my system...and saw it created a folder on my system that shows and holds each slide...but not sure what to upload from that?

I know if I send someone a power point in my email, it can be viewed simply enough as webpages the email redirects to, but how do I say create this as an .htm saved and accessible in my public.html folder?

thanks for your attempt to wade thru and understand what I'm trying to do...and then for any advice or insights...

Hi Paintguy:

As you've probably found out by now, Power Point files are Microsoft "proprietary", meaning that you need the PPT Microsoft "Viewer" program installed on your PC if you haven't purchased Power Point.

You CAN save your PPT presentation in HTM or Web format. Just use the "Save as" feature in Power Point. PP will create a directory of your presentation, using the presentation file name. You could then upload this directory and all the files in it to your Lunarpages  account and then create an "index" file with a "link" to your HTM presentation files. but it is NOT "graceful" and will not display your presentation like you see when you use the Power Point program or viewer.

I use to use PPT files on some of my sites and put a link next to each file so people could download to the "viewer" software for those who didn't own Power Point software. Frankly, people didn't use them very often because of "suspicions" associated to file downloads, so I gave up using Power Point entirely.

One way around this is to make a "video" of your PPT presentation and upload the video. There are a number of software programs you can source to video your desktop/screen including audio. Try a search in Google. YouTube!! and lots of other sites will host your video and you can post the link in your site pages. Hope that helps. Good luck!

My personal experience with MS' "new" PowerPoint generation of an html view of the slides has not been good. It does not give me the control over the presentation that I could achieve using the old version. Plus, it uses JavaScript where the older version did not.

Since I am stuck with JavaScript I downloaded a script from the web and use a slightly modified version of that along with a jpg export of the slides. That serves my purposes much better than what MS puts out as html.  I'd be glad to post a copy of the script I am using if anyone wants it.

I usually convert my PPT into a video to share it online. I find it convenient for me, and for my viewers.  Grinning Grinning Grinning

That is what I usually do as well. And you can use Camtasia Studio to create your video powerpoints. There is a 30 days free trial so there is sufficient time for you to try as well.
