the default page seems to be "default.html"

how do I add to this? I would like to add "default.html.php" to the list.

I didn't see anything in the faq or on the cpanel. Google search shows things such as editing "httpd.conf" which I cannot find and editing ".htaccess" which I cannot find.

Can someone point me in the right direction?
Any help would be appreciated.

The default page should be index.htm or index.html or index.php. Add it to what list? You cannot edit httpd.conf on shared plans as that is a system file for the whole server. If you do not see .htaccess, you can create it in File Manager.

Although "default.html" should be in the default search order (DirectoryIndex) (after index.html, index.htm, and index.php), you should not use it for a production site. Use one of the three index.* files. You have an .htaccess file in your site root directory (/) -- it may be empty. You have no access to httpd.conf -- any site Apache configuration information goes in .htaccess. Note that PHP configuration information goes in php.ini, not php_value/php_flag in .htaccess (and you need an suPHP_ConfigPath entry in .htaccess). Long story short: you need to understand the operation of the server, its default configuration, and how to do your own configuration. Don't just blindly copy what some other site says to do -- it may not apply at LP.
