hi there,
i have created a .war file and deployed it in the webapps folder of my hosting under /webapps/osc I have also created an index.html file and it is currently in this directory path: webapps/osc/index.html however when i try to access it via a browser, I get HTTP 404 not found errors.. whats going on?
my domain is www.osc.net.au and i am trying to get to www.osc.net.au/webapps/osc/index.html

FYI, the domain is with another company and the way we are using lunarpages as a host is pointing to your servers IP address (nebula).

thanks for your help,
mike

Is the html directory you are attempting to access directly off of the public_html directory?
(You can't put viewable files on the root of the directory you see when you ftp in) They MUST be in the public_html dir.

so when you login/ftp you see..

/public_html/webapps....etc as the directory not just

/webapps/index.html

yes they are in the public_html directory. The path is exactly this:

public_html/webapps/osc/index.html

I have checked upteen times now to make sure, and changed permissions on all directories to be read and executed by world, but still nothing?
please help!

I just went and actually checked your site. I got the following error message:

No web site is configured at this address.

It appears that you have a bigger problem than a 404 Error.

http://www.osc.net.au/ Gives the same error.

Did you setup the DNS forwarding correctly?
If you did it very recently, it may not have moved over yet on my connection, but thats a strange error to be getting! I think its more of a problem than just a 404 error though.

You may want to try accessing your site directly from the nebula server, bypassing the DNS setup:

http://nebula.lunarpages.com/~username/webapps/..

If this works, then your problem is most likely your DNS setup. I do not know your username (the one you login with to ftp files to the website), so I am unable to check wether this works or not.

it works when i do that - not a problem.. so you think its to do with the DNS setup? The mail service i am using is with the company i have the domain with, and when i tried to change the name servers to yours, they wouldnt let me cause they said it would disrupt the current mail service, so they asked me for the IP of the server (nebula) which they are now pointing to... what do you think the problem could be with that setup?

Hmm..

Here are a few thoughts that might be right ;-)

How long ago did you do the move? Give it a good 24-72 hours before thinking all is lost. If it is a local redirect on the server that the domain is pointing too, you will see an immediate update. Now what the problem might be, is that nebula (the server @ lunarpage) sees the incoming request, but does not know what domain it is from (since its just getting the request from the other server), so it has no idea what website to serve! So it just throws up an error saying that there is no such site.

You might want to try bouncing that one off of support@lunarpages.com

Also, you might want to tell your host, that if you move the email, it wont inturrupt it, there will just be a period where the email could be either going to the old server, or the new server. While peoples DNS switches over. If you wanted to stick with the old server for the email, just update the domain to the lunarpages one, and in the CPanel edit the MX record to point to your old email server. Or you could just switch over to lunarpages all together and save yourself the hassle.

But before you switch over, just make sure you set everything up identical to the way it was on the old server. Then all that people will have to do, is check both the old and new accounts for a short while, until everything moves over successfully. You could potentially make it almost 100% seamless if you set up the old site to forward the emails it receives to the new site.

Do you follow what I'm saying?

- Ed :-)
(Make sure you get an honest answer from them about the email.. because they are risking losing a customer and $$ if you switch over entirely).
