Ive made some links on my web site to files that are in MS WORD and EXCEL. However when i click on the link the authentication box pops up asking for a password. If i click OK without entering anything it opens up the MS WORD file!!! How do i prevent the authentication box popping up each time users click on the link. Note: The directory is NOT protected using WEB PROTECT...

Thanks in advance for any assistance

Did you  ever have web-protect on that directory, then take it off?

It might not have been disabled properly.

If that is the case, you need to login to your Cpanel and browse around until you find a .htaccess file. It may be in a wierd place, or possibly just in the directory that is apparently protected.

If you delete the .htaccess file, it may start working properly again. Make sure you backup your files first.

Also, if you decide to use FTP, remember, most FTP programs cannot show .htaccess files. The Cpanel file manager does.

Thanks Stephan for the advice....i did find some .htaccess files in my root directory but i cannot delete/rename/move the file. If i try to rename the file it does so, but it also leaves the orginal .htaccess file. Cannot delete it either ????. By the way, the file is empty.

Any suggestions ???

Thanks again

If the .htaccess file is empty, it is doing nothing. Don't worry about it.

You may have permissions set wrong on the directory - not sure what the correct ones are, but I think 755. Just to test it to see if that is the problem you can set it to 777 - but don't leave it there, as that gives global access to anyone to that directory.

Does it happen just on the MS word files in that directory, or all files? It might be something in the Word file itself...

I found the following site which may shed some light:

www.safenetwork.net/DHSAdmin/downloading.htm

See under 'Problems Downloading Files" and then solution 2. I will be getting broadband in the next week or so and will download the suggested service pack file. Hopefully this will solve the problem.

Cheers
