Hello,

I just uploaded my first web sit a day or so ago and aside from a few minor things that I would like to add (why are email forms so hard to get working?!), it’s working well.  Yeah! :O)

There is one slight problem that I’ve noticed.  When I do a search on Google, my site comes up, but it looks like this:

Index of /
Index of /. Name Last modified Size Description. [DIR] Parent Directory 24-Oct-2007 12:26 - [DIR] cgi-bin/ 24-Oct-2007 12:26 - ...
www.thewyvernmanor.com/ - 1k - Cached - Similar pages - Note this

How do I go about getting the above to look like other web page descriptions on a search engine?  I tried using the meta tag below on my index.html page, but nothing happened. :O(

<META name=”The Wyvern Manor Gaming Society” content=”Do you like tabletop games, RPGs, LARPs?  Then visit us!  Located in Orange County, CA.”

Thanks!

Your title tag is

<title>index.html</title>

I'm guessing that it used to be missing, or was just "/". Why don't you give a more informative page title?

<title>Wyvern Manor Gaming Society's Home Page</title>

Hmm...good idea!  I changed the title of my first page as you suggested.  It's was "index.html (I thought that I read somewhere that all web site first pages had to be named "index.html" on LunarPages), now it's "The Wyvern Manor Gaming Society".  I checked Google but nothing has changed.  Perhaps it will take some time for the search engine to catch up.

That may solve part of the problem, but how do I change the rest of the search engine description to something like this (from the Brown Universtiy Gaming Club):

Brown University's Fantasy Gaming Society
In Rhode Island. Plays both tabletop RPGs and LARP. With information about campaigns, and about the convention Procon.
www.brown.edu/Students/Fantasy/ - 1k - Cached - Similar pages - Note this

Surely that will take more than changing my first page title.  Either that or my page will have a very, very long title! :OD

Are there Tags or Divisions or something that I can use?

Remember this is my first web site so I'm still learning! :Op

Thanks! :O)

Here are a few from my website:

Code:
<meta name="keywords" content="cts,catskill technology services,catskill tech,catskilltech,catskilltech.com,computer,consulting,computer consulting,service,services,computer services,programming,computer programming,web site design,web site,phil perry,phil m perry,woodstock,ny,new york,catskills,catskill,hudson valley,hudson river,hudson,overlook mountain" />
<meta name="description" content="Catskill Technology Services, LLC, offers computer programming and software services and products. Home Page for Catskill Technology Services site" />
<meta name="copyright" content="(c) &copy; copyright 2005 - 2007 by Catskill Technology Services, LLC. All rights reserved." />
<meta name="author" content="Phil M. Perry" />

By the way, your <meta> tag you described earlier will be ignored... it's not a valid "name".

Here are a few more: http://vancouver-webpages.com/META/metatags.detail.html and http://www.i18nguy.com/markup/metatags.html.

Google has to crawl your site again. It can be weeks or even months between crawls. Patience!

I notice that your index page content is made up of a series of images.  You do have "alt" tags for them that contain the text of the image but I'm wondering if search engines read the "alt" information in the way as they would read actual text content on a web page?  Anyone know?

Ah...thus the use of the word "crawl". :OD

I put this tag on my index/first page today just above the <title> line:

<meta name="Description" content="Do you like tabletop gaming, LARPs, RPGs?  Then visit us! Located in Orange County, CA." />

I'll be patient, keep calm, breath slowly and wait to see what happens! <big grin>:OD

Thanks!

That's good! Glad to hear it's working fine now.

By the way, rereading an earlier post by you, you said

Quote

You misunderstood file names versus page titles. The file name  is not found in  the page, but is the name of the thing (file) holding all the content. It can be anything you want, but if you want the server to automatically display it when someone comes to your site, it needs to be index.html, index.htm, or index.php. Within the page's HTML content, the <title> tag just gives a descriptive title to be shown at the top of the browser (as well as used for bookmarks or favorites). It has nothing to do with the name of the file.
