Hello,

Newbie question here:

Why does the URL for my site have to include /index.htm?  Is there any fix that could make it more simple:

http://domainname.net

I know just a little about HMTL.  Some help sites suggested I use a redirect .htaccess but that is greek to me and one site said it would not work with Windows.

Any help or explanation in layman's terms would be appreciated.

Thanks!

It should not require the file name. Servers are set up to look for index.html, and if not found, index.htm, then index.php. Some servers also look for home.html (I think).

If you do not have a file named index.html, your index.htm should be found if you just give the domain name. What kind of behavior are you seeing? And how long has your domain been set up (it takes a day or two to reach the whole DNS network). Note that this is for Linux (Apache) servers -- I don't know what Windows' search order is.

You mentioned Windows -- is your server Windows or Linux? What counts is what your server is, not what your PC is. Windows does not have .htaccess.

Hi,

Thank you for the response.

In answer to your questions, the account is about a week old. I purchased a new domain name.  Server is linux (apache). I uploaded my index page saved as index.htm to the folder /public_html using ftp.   If I use the URL http://domainname.net, I am directed to the Apache Test2 page.  If I use http://domainname.net/index.htm,  then I see my page(s) on the web.

From your answer, it seems that I should see my page using either URL.   I know of many sites where the main page can be accessed without the /index.htm extension, which is what I would like mine to do.  Just wondered if there is something I have done wrong and if so, what is the fix?

Thank you again

Very odd - I would suggest you check your .htaccess file inside the public_html folder (if there is one) to see if there are any odd redirects in place.  Also, if you submit a help desk ticket to support, they can probably get this fixed up for you a little faster.   Thumbs Up  Good luck!

There is no .htaccess file inside public_html, so I will submit a ticket as you suggest.

Thank you so much for your help.

Did you verify as Mr. Phil suggested that there is no index.html file existing in your public_html directory? If it is there, simply delete or rename the file. The index.htm should then be the default page.
