Is there a way to keep people from viewing the contents of a folder by just entering the address and folder name in their browser address window? I know I can put a dummy "index.html" file in each folder, but that seems like something the server software should be able to handle.

Yes you can. Look at the index button in your control panel, you should find it at the bottom of the first page.

It will deactivate the posibility for users to view the contents of your folders.

Yes, you can set that up in CPanel.

If you want to set it up manually, search google.com for .htaccess and you should find some information on how to do it.

Thanks for the suggestions by both Max and Stephan. I've used the CPanel to change directory permissions, and have read one of the articles about .htaccess; however, I don't know where the .htaccess file is at. It should have a number of lines in it by now, but even with the "show hidden files" option in my FTP program, I don't see it. Where should it be?

.htaccess files are completely hidden!

It's because they start with a .

If you want to edit it, you can goto the file manager in CPanel.

It's funny, me and Max must have replied at exactly the same time.

I found an ".htaccess" file in my public_html folder, but according to the file edit function of the File Manager, it is empty. Yet, when I return to the Index Manager, it shows that all of the folders that I set as "no index" are still set that way. (BTW, the icon that is supposed to display next to folders seems to be a broken link to a file called "noindex.gif").

If the "no index" info is kept in .htaccess, where is .htaccess kept?

I'm not sure what you mean.

Each folder that you want to protect should have .htaccess file in it.

None of them should be empty, that is wierd.
