Thanks

Found something under General Admin > General Configuration in the documentation you might want to look for in your options:

Disable board - When Yes, the board is disabled and will not display to anyone. Do not log out before you re-enable the board, or you will not be able to log back in.

Thanks - stupid question but I wanted to take it offlien for a couple of weeks - the option above doesnt allow you to log-off once you have disabled it, so I am thinkign that isnt really practical because I will need to log-off (or be logged-off) during the 2 weeks downtime ? unless I am missing something ??

That's odd.  I've used Invision before and it certainly was not like that.  I would have assumed the same for PHPBB.  What you could do instead is place an index.htm file in the root stating the forum is offline.  Or copy index.php and save with a new name and edit index.php to tell people the forum is offline, then replace the original index file when you're ready.
