Hi all,

It's been a terribly long time since I've used FrontPage and I've never created a site completely on my own (I'd design and have someone else handle the back end) so I'm completely lost with how to get things going.

When I open FrontPage98 a 'Getting Started' box appears giving me two options ('Open an existing FrontPage Web' and 'Create a new FrontPage Web') and no matter which I choose I nearly always get an error message (posted below). I say almost because though I started the program exactly the same way each time (there aren't many different ways to do a left-mouse-click   "[Smile]"  ) two times I was able to get going. Once I was able to create a new FrontPage Web and another time I was able to open it (though then I kept getting the same error message nearly every time I tried to do something).

The error message says for me to contact either my internet service provider (I'm currently on dial-up so no luck there) or my web server administrator (I hope I'm correct in assuming that that’s what LP is), which is why I am posting here. Can anyone tell me what might be going wrong as I've tried FrontPage Help and also searched the net for answers but didn't have any luck with either and have no idea where else to look? Any advice would be greatly appreciated (though I already know not to eat yellow snow so no need filling me in on that one:) ). Thank you in advance for your time.

Most kindly,
Dawn

This is the error message that I get:

"The server could not complete your request. Contact your Internet service provider or web server administrator to make sure that the server has the FrontPage Server extensions installed. For more specific information, click Details."

---------
Then when I click the 'Details' button I get this:

"Below is the message that the server returned. For more informatio, contact yout Internet service provider or web server asministrator.

404 Not Found The requested URL /_vti_bin/shtml.exe/_vti_rpc was not found on this server."

Hi Dawn,

I use Front Page 2002. I'm not sure I have your answer, but did you set the Frontpage extentions on your site? You do this through the CPanel.

Once I figured out how to use Frontpage (I ended up getting a manual from my local library), I haven't had any problems.

Hope this helps.

Joanne,

Thank you for responding. I really appreciate your help. Yes, at first I hadn't set the FrontPage extensions from the cPanel. Then I stumbled onto them and though I'm still slightly confused as to what they are exactly I downloaded them but unfortunately am still having the same problem loading FrontPage. I've since ordered a few used FP manuals from Amazon and expect them to arrive soon so I still have my fingers crossed for the time being.  "[Smile]"  Again, thank you so much. Please take care and have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Genuinely,
Dawn

Hey all,

I believe I figured out what was going wrong so I just thought I'd quickly share in case someone else later runs into the same problem.

Note:  Prior to opening FrontPage98 I first created a regular Windows folder to store my FrontPage Web in, named the folder (i.e. FP98 Web), then noted its location (i.e. C:\Documents and Settings\Dawn\My Documents\FP98 Web).

1)  Open FrontPage98
2)  A “Getting Started” box should automatically appear*
3)  Choose “Create a New FrontPage Web” then select “OK”
4)  Under section 1, choose the type of FrontPage Web you’d like to create
5)  Under section 2, give your FrontPage Web a name
6)  Still under section 2, click “Change” to specify a location for your FrontPage Web [note: using the location that FrontPage automatically inserted was what was causing my error to orccur]
7)  Insert the location of the Windows folder that you created earlier (i.e. C:\Documents and Settings\Dawn\My Documents\FP98 Web) then click “OK”
8)  Click “OK” again and viola! A new FrontPage Web with no error messages! Oh, the simple things in life. lol

* If a “Getting Started” box does not automatically appear, simply go to “File” > “New” > “FrontPage Web” then proceed from step 4 above.
